I have a 62 Reissue Fender Precision bass. I love the bass but can't warm to the neck which is super wide at the nut even for a precision bass.
I am looking at purchasing a 62 reissue Jazz Bass neck online from the stratosphere on ebay and swapping out the necks.

From what I read online jazz bass and precision bass necks are swapped out all the time with ease however when i spoke to my local luthier he seemed a bit sceptical as to whether the jazz bass neck would fit on my precision bass.

I would really appreciate some input on this one.

Is it possible?

Anything I need to look out for?

Here are the specs of the precision bass..

Here are the specs of the jazz bass neck that I am looking at purchasing...

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hey boss, the ebay listing has ended.

If BroDave doesn't set you along the right path on this one (unlikely), you can search the older posts, where he and others have answered, and done, what you're lookin for.

There should'nt be any MAJOR mods needed, the absolute worst case scenario would be a light sanding of the base of the neck on the side that fit into the pocket, and thats only due to a possible tight neck pocket because the newer neck POSSIBLY having a thick finish.
That would be the worst case, but other than a tight pocket there is no cutting or routing or need for a pro to step in,a couple of rubs with some light sandpaper will help sqeek in a new/newer neck in a bass w/tight pocket.
It otherwise should drop right in,the 4 body mount screws pattern is the same and the pickgaurd will have the same dimensions,SO GOOD LUCK,CHECK BACK IF YOU HAVE ANY ISSUE'S W/IT.

I've installed a jazz neck on a p-bass before and it was a good fit, except that in the installation process you can feel like it doesn't cover the entire neck pocket, which is the case since its a thinner neck anyways. Other than that, it worked just fine. Hope this helps.

The neck in the auction is grossly overpriced. I believe that seller is known for breaking down working basses then selling the pieces. If you are willing to pay that much I would custom order a bass neck. Warmoth necks are great but the knotheads put that stupid extended fingerboard on the necks that hangs over like a tang and gets in the way of a standard pickguard and the truss rod adjustment. If you can order one of those necks without the extended fingerboard that would be great.

Theres a few pro's and cons with SOME aftermarket necks,I bought a Tele style 1 piece Maple neck/fingerboard on sale from All-Parts for $99.00$ BUT it was'nt finished, had'nt a nut installed and without the 4 neck mount holes drilled(tuner holes are pre-drilled)).
I was aware of all this but it did'nt matter because I know how to install and cut the nut properly and was able to drill my own holes, but to someone who cannot or does'nt know how to do this can end up with another expense along with having it finished too.
But the posiitive is I must admit it was the BEST neck as far as stability goes I have ever owned,I had it sitting in a closet for 2 years and then on a bass un-played for 2 more years and its NEVER needed an adjustment to the truss(thank God,removing the neck to get to the tru-rod STINKS!.
It did require about 5 passes on each side with a 1/2 of a piece of fairly smooth sandpaper to get it to slid right in a little easier(I do mean 5 passes)it was'nt totally necessary to do because it did fit snuggly, but I did'nt want to chance chipping off any paint from the area(just my luck)and to spend only a minute to insure a good fit was worth it.
There are alot of good necks on e-bay that are more cost effective than buying new and all the stuff that come with it,I had a JazzBass special(made in Japan)neck on my P-bass and it was easily a number one bass, every single place it went it attracted buyers and for a good reason, they made great necks back in that period.
I would go with a Geddy Lee neck(aside from killer looks)they are thin and fast plus made well,I would avoid Mex made necks(my opinion)I'm scouting e-bay all the time,if I see somethin I drop you a PM.

I used to do neck swaps between my precision and Jazz basses all of the time.
Its no big deal.

You just need to make sure that the neck is aligned correctly so that the strings are centered over the fingerboard because you will have more neck pocket space when you put a Jazz neck on a Precision bass.

Putting a Precision Bass neck on a Jazz body should also work but the neck pocket may be very tight for that P-bass neck.
It was great to do this because it was like I had two different basses. The different necks and bodies can be a better combination than what you had originally.
