I've just upgraded from a Mexican sunburst P-bass to a AV '62 & the difference in body colors makes me ask:

What are the colors used on the AV '62? In sunlight the outer/dark color looks almost Damson/purple.

I also have the AV '57 in White blonde & a MiJ '51 Ri in Butterscotch.

I think the Standard MIM sunburst is "brown sunburst" (dark brown and yellow) while the AV '62 is "three color sunburst" made up of yellow, red and black. I have an AV '57, with is "two color sunburst" which is yellow and black.

DITTO! there are a few different "fenderburst" color schemes, the Two Tone Sunburst(on the earlier p-bass and such etc...)The "BrownBurst(most common on the Mex line to cover the wood a little more)The new CopperBurst(close to the brownburst but with a metallic/copper hue)and The Three Tone Sunburst(makes up the majority of the Tri-Color Burst finishes).
There are deveations on the 3 tone s/burst,some are a little more red,Others can be more brownish-black on the edge and some can be clearer to show of the graining ETC...,I guess even the person finishing has a preference in the application, fading and briteness, but in a nut-shell Lpdeluxe said it best.

The 3 colors can be seen on the MiM - the outer being as black as a black thing but on the AV in daylight (impossible to photograph with my lack of skills) the outer appears to be a very Deep Purple. I know it's Nitro Cellulose & not the same as the MiMs but there must be a name for it - it ain't black!

Another thing to consider in all of this is the wood, different woods hold colors differently in a number of ways and its application is determined by the visual quality of the wood(graining,#of pieces)a nice piece of alder will have less covering qualities than lets say a 3 piece basswood body that would call for a heavier darker application.
There's alot of variables in the process that determines final appearence, and over time the wood dries/cures and the finish itself also changes w/time,I remember the the day I received my Japanese 83 Squier P-bass and I could'nt believe how much red there was in the finish and the longer I had it the more visable the red became, all these things are what makes each individual bass different from one another in both looks and sound which only cements my opinion that wood quality is a important aspect of bass construction,it's one of the reasons I dont suggest building/modding a entry level bass made from dull tone-less wood(agathis)by adding expensive aftermarket up-grades when so much of the tone rides on the natural tone of the body-wood.
