. IF ? IF my aunt had B@!!S she'd be my uncle! LOL!!!
We would all have killer basses if WE were rich men, thats why I learned how to build'em,fix'em,mod'em and find them diamonds in the ruff, there's so many sleeper basses out there for fraction of what pre-conceived "dream basses" can cost, but that is a sweet bass,a bit flashy for me but sweet non-the-less  .

Learn as much as you can and start search for the diamonds in the rough. They are out there and often for less than 10% of the cost of that Bass. While they aren't a C/S Bass, they are nice instruments and can be re-made into a close analogue of that Bass.

I like unusual finishes on my pbasses. Where could I get one of mine repainted in a custom color? What kind of place could do it? Besides the CS, I mean. I probably couldn't afford that. Check with a tech, or a luthier?

Pick your design and finish. They can do it. Quality is not cheap.

I have a page where I list competent refinishing shops in all price ranges on my website. Click the link in my signature below then click the REFINISH, RESTORE & MAJOR REPAIR red link about two-thirds of the way down the page. There is a new outfit I haven't added yet because I have not talked yet to anyone that has used them but their prices are almost too good to be true. Their link is: http://www.guitarpaintguys.com/store.html but remember I am not yet recommending them, just informing you that they exist and they do a $180 repaint. However, the links on my page I can vouch for their work as I have actually seen it at least once.

While they indeed do some excellent work I have recently had some negative feedback from a customer that Sims Custom Shop (which paints ANYTHING including guitars) had an extremely extended turn-around time on a guitar body refinish for him. Part of that would be the customer's fault for not asking what the turn-around time would be. No matter WHO you choose for a refinish, ASK FOR THE TURN-AROUND TIME! Apparently Sim's has been quite busy. The top 3 quality shops in my book right now are Gord Miller, Curtis Novak and Lay's. However, any of the shops I list are COMPETENT at refinishing and do professional work. Some will take longer than others as they have a larger backlog of orders or fewer people actually working. Some of the highest quality refinish shops are ONE MAN ARTIST TYPE OPERATIONS, while the multi-tech shops like Atlanta Guitar Works could have a huge backlog of orders. I list many refinishing services in different parts of North America and you might find one very close to you that would be worth a try.

I've actually seen some refinish jobs done by auto paint and body shops that actually rivaled a new factory finish, BUT I've seen far more that were obviously refinishes because the paint was far too thick. The goal is to make it look factory new but aged slightly, otherwise it just doesn't look quite right.

BE SURE TO READ THE INTRO IN RED ON MY REFINISHING PAGE ABOUT REFINISHING COLLECTOR CLASS INSTRUMENTS! Also be advised that Curtis Novak will NOT refinish any instrument with the original factory finish on it, vintage or not. So if your instrument has the original factory finish then you'll have to spray it with a can of Krylon yourself! Only then Curtis Novak do a proper refinish. I know that sounds crazy, but that's his own personal rule. He's a top refinishing guy and makes his living doing it, but he knows that once he refinishes an instrument it will never be collector class again.

You can also save yourself a LOT of money by stripping the body yourself. It isn't as easy as it sounds by the way.

For the $6K you might be able to land an original vintage '69. Of course for $6K you may have to settle for something thats not mint or even excellent. For half that you can get a decent custom shop. There's a few great custom shop p basses on ebay in custom colors. If it's not near stripped don't refin it!
