You are describing what sounds like a 1985 Fender Japan PB-555 Precision Bass. They were not intended for export out of Japan but some eventually found there way to the west on the secondary market. They were primarily sold to Japanese professionals and followed up on the USA Elite II concept of dual P-Bass pickup sets. They also made a tilted P/J bass, the PJ-535.

Go to this link and see the bottom left bass photo, then right click on it and zoom. Is that it? http://brochures.yokochou.com/guitar-and-amp/fenderjapan/boxer/en_03.html

They are very scarce in the west, but I would not say they are rare in the world since another one did pop up on here within the past year as another owner had one and wanted the same information. Fender only imported to the West the Japanese basses that were pretty much copies of the iconic USA models and once production got going in Corona they only imported Japanese reissues.

To be completely frank, I honestly have no idea about the value. I've never actually seen one in person. I did hear of one forum member who bought the one they had within the past year for $450 USD which sounded like a good deal to me.

Forum member Lawsuitbass is the resident expert on Japanese Fenders. He will probably know more about them than I do.

I do know that the export model Japanese E series Fenders that came to the west usually sell for more than any other Japanese Fenders as they are considered the better Japanese ones in several regards and there are people who collect only E-series Fender Basses and guitars.

It would be worth at least what another E-Series Fender bass is worth in similar condition and as far as collector value goes it should be worth more due the scarcity in the west. To a Japanese E series collector in the west it might be the Holy Grail for all I know. I would think the P/J version would be scarcer since I now know of 4 of the dual tilted Precision pickups and zero with the tilted P/J pickup setup.

You should expect that some people that don't know about them actually being a real Fender Japan production instrument at first glance would probably discount them as a knockoff, which they of course aren't. So the ignorance factor might hold down the value making them less desirable to someone who doesn't know for sure what they are. I say this because the first one I saw was on eBay about 8 years ago and several people were asking the seller questions about authenticity. I don't think it made reserve with the authenticity called into question and it was not re-listed. The seller said he thought it was a custom or prototype bass which got me to researching that model. I found out that they are real Fender Japan production instruments sold only in Japan by Fender Japan in 1985/86. All four of them I know about in the west have the E5 serial.
