A little bit ago I bought a P bass off a guy from New York, I was wondering if I could punch in the serial numbers on the back of the head stock and find out what year it was made, just for laughs really. Is it possible to do that on this website or any other site for that matter, thanks alot.

Once you have had a few Fenders one can tell what year and where it was made by the serial numbers and letters alone, not always 100% accurate on some older ones but after the late 60s or so its pretty consistant.
Its really not that complicated

Wanted to pipe up and offer everyone my personal "Printable Fender Field Guide." It is only 4 pages long but covers all Fender instruments through 2009 and will be updated soon through 2011 model year. I keep one in the dash of the car as you never know when you are going to run across something to check out. As a general rule the serials are a good starting point on dating an instrument but there are a few irregularities where pot codes and neck stampings, stickers or pencil marks don't jive with the serial but these instances are a small percentage of instruments. Still enough to say that the serial is not the final word, but generally considered accurate until you check the pot dates. People forget that the model year runs on the fiscal year which is from July 1 until June 30 of the following year. So it was serialized June 30th it probably has a serial from one year but might have a pot code from the following year. Also CBS bought a huge lot of pots in 1966 shortly after ramping up production, so many in fact that it took them till 1970 to use them all up.

I agree b.dave about the serial number point he made Fender co. never threw parts away and its evident with basses having parts that are years old and end up on newer made basses.
Fender would use ALL the old parts(still new mind you)and only then would he allow the newer parts installed in production and they were also sent out to the authorized by Fender guitar techs to fix Fender's under warrenty or sent to licensed repairmen for warrenty work or just general tune-ups(sticking pots, intonation, finish repairs and fretlevels)and can cost less due to being discontinued but after awhile they became really valuable(original Fender parts)for the same reason that lowered their prices now drives it back up thanks to being no longer made.
OH WELL :?
