I recently bought what seems to be a precison/jazz hybrid, and would like to know more about it. The guitar is a left hand four-string. The headstock says "Made in USA" and "Precision bass" , the neck is probably a jazz and the body precision. There are both precision pick ups and a jazz bridge pick up, and active electronics. The serial number is N7267847, indicating 1997 or 1998.

There are three controls. The one closet to the neck is volume. Number two I am not sure about. I would guess it to be the pickup mix, any ideas? What confuses me is that the difference it makes seems small, except that it gives a large change in volume.
The third control is two stacke potmeters. I believe these are tone controls.

Any idea what this guitar might be?

I think it is a precision bass special, from the California Series.

And I think the controls are Volume (neck pickup), Volume (bridge pickup) and Tone.

Are you sure about that? The U.S. instrument dating guide suggests California Series instruments have the AMXN s/n prefix. I have two Precision Bass Specials (California Series) and both serial number prefixes are AMXN. Also there were no lefty California Series instruments.

His s/n suggests '97 or '98 production but I don't know what other U.S. made P/J hybrids were available at that time. His instrument is something other than a California Series bass (possibly a frankenstein).

Could the OP post pics?

I got my information from a Dutch E-Bay site, on which the following bass was placed:

No, the first control is definitely total volume. With that one down, there is no signal out, what so ever.

I am starting to think that it might be a Frankenstein (I suppose that you mean by that a guitar that has been modified in some way). The main reason I am thinking this is that the pick ups are EMG. I believe EMG pick ups are an aftermarket thing, and not used on guitars delivered from Fender. (Correct?)

Yup, that link definitely shows a P Bass Special, mine are just like that one except both of mine are maple neck and one's vintage white, the other's sunburst. I love those basses! They're exactly the configuration I've always liked.

Now I don't think asbjorns' describing a P Bass Special though. Yeah, a "frankenstein" is an instrument that didn't come from the Fender, simply made up of various parts (they could be all Fender parts but not originally assembled by the factory that way). Does your bass have a gold anodized pickguard? Does it have the same headstock markings as that P Bass Special (does it actually say "Precision Bass Special")? I'm not aware of any P Basses that came from Fender with EMGs as standard equipment.

Show or link up some pics, I get the feeling it's a frankenstein, not an original Fender. Of course I may be wrong...

Sjekk her; http://www.fender.com/products//search. ... no=0135760
Den modellen har aktiv Jazzbass pickup i stol og en ordinær P-bass i Middle posistion.
Denne tror jeg er lage i Mexico og da skal serienr benynne med MZ
