I do apologise if I offend anyone by pointing this out, but this is precisely what I meant when I said "trollish or vindictive" in my earlier post. If this kind of thing is acceptable, how is it that the NICP posts were unacceptable?

Mods?

Talking of mods, perhaps this thread ought to be locked. How is this spirit of crude provocation going to get anyone anywhere?

Before anyone else bothers to reply to OZRV, consider some of his other postings on the various Fender Forums. OZRV is the first person I’ve looked at whose most active forum is POST MINDLESS BLATHER HERE.

Now a look at the rapier whit and stoic wisdom of OZRV:

“First Party with Stevie Nick's for a day
then Jam with Stevie Ray Vaughn for a night
Then Nail Gwen Stephani for a day to recover ”

“The term vintage typically means 25 years..... A 1986 strat is now a vintage guitar.”

First, I hate the "title" of this particular thread. There should be no us vs. them. We're all here for sharing, learning, and enjoyment.

Just to be 100% technically accurate, the name of this thread is "Brad *and* oxfan", not "Brad vs. oxfan." :-)

slidewaysracing wrote:
Truthfully, the primary reason that I've been hanging out here is BECAUSE of the fun and craziness.

Yes, but we do have to be honest with each other here ... these are the official Fender forums. I have to think that the number of folks who sign here hoping to engage in in-depth bass gear discussions is inevitably going to be larger than the set of folks who are hoping to see clown photos. Am I right? :-)

slidewaysracing wrote:
I’m a beginner and have nothing but questions & opinions to offer, so being able to participate via humor on a thread makes it less intimidating for me to post.

I urge you to immediately post any and all bass related questions and opinions that you may have. And I urge others here, when they see folks responding to your inquiries in an intimidating or condescending manner, to rush in to your rescue. If a beginner cannot log in here and receive a welcome, warm, friendly, and helpful response that ultimately results in a positive entry into the hobby, then you just let me know and I'll even send in thugs from Fender HQ if need be. :-)

And, for me, as pbassbob said. “the "antics" serve quite effectively as a "relief valve" of sorts, where a comedic bout of "can you top this" offsets a bad day or a bad week in a high stress occupation”.

Understood here and while it's clear that these antics are relieving for some, it's also clear that they have become equally grating on the nerves for others. So in that sense they're making others' bad weeks and high stress occupations only that much more so.

Brad, I was very surprised that you used a public thread to get in touch with Oxfan. I would have expected that you would have done a pm. Perhaps you did, and Oxfan wasn’t able to respond. I hear that being a forum moderator ranks near the top of the list of thankless jobs, so I’m sure this has been one of those things euphemistically known as ”a challenge”.

While most mods would no doubt take something like this offline I actually think it's far healthier to have a discussion of this nature right here in public. Why? Because you can see for yourselves playing out right here in this thread the various strong opinions that exist on the topic and the tricky spot it's put me in as a moderator. The honest truth is that oxfan did send me a rather thoughtful explanation about the NICP via e-mail and I must admit, I have not even had time to properly respond to that message (my apologies, oxfan). I have EXTREMELY limited moderation / intervention time available and typically need to achieve results quickly so when I saw folks discussing the matter here I elected to simply start chatting about it right here for the reasons above.

Regarding it being a "job" - I do want to quickly cover the fact that moderating these forums constitutes perhaps 1/100th of my overall daily responsibilities, believe it or not. The forums here were created simply to encourage high-quality, family-friendly discussion about the products and company that I love (and which also happens to pay the bills :-) ). I'd really like to encourage each posting here to pass the "safe for family, safe for kids" litmus test the vast majority of the time. Anyway, the point being that moderating the forums is a mere morsel of my actual job at Fender; for years we've been able to get away with that structure because folks more consistently treated each other with respect, dignity, and courteousness. If we're moving into a new era where that's no longer the case that's certainly a sad thing. Heck, as I type this this very thread is getting out of hand so I'll have to clean that up.

As a final comment here (this has nothing to do with your post but just including it while I'm thinking of it), I'm seeing quite a few comments that appear to be targeting Chet Feathers. Just want to emphasize: numerous individuals have complained to me about the clownage particularly over the past 2 to 3 weeks, it's seemed ... and it's been more a testament to my mind-numbing workload than anything of late that it's taken me this long to hop over and properly address the issue. Don't blame Chet - blame society. :-)

In my opinion there actually is no need to create any special room or thread on the Fender Forum for the NICP. We already have our own Facebook group to stay in touch and we can hang out at Sabre Lane's Conservatory forum.

brotherdave, thanks for your comments and explanation here and honestly after watching this thread play out a bit I think you're right on the money with the statement above. It's obvious that you folks have managed to forge genuine lifetime friendships which is awesome ... and I think those friendships will be equally strong regardless of the specific site or medium being used to power the communication.

That said, I also want to make it clear that no one's done anything wrong here nor is anyone being asked to leave. If ya'll wish to continue to hang out here you are absolutely welcome to do so, I'd just ask at this point that we establish some distance from the NICP/clown stuff a tad at this point. It is totally your prerogative, of course, as far as whether you wish to stay here or leave altogether; I can assure many NICP members that you'd certainly be missed here if you choose to leave altogether.

Forgive us NICP members if sometimes we've been a little over-exuberant - it's a rock thing, isn't it? - because we do care. We deeply appreciate the Fender instruments we use daily to play the music we love so much, and we, often because we have had to do it the hard way over many years ourselves, deeply care for the younger and less experienced players we try to help.

PVTele, some great comments here and again, as stated above you're certainly welcome to hang out here. Just asking for folks to cool it on the clown group pile-on stuff.

I'm ignoring ozrv's unproductive comments here and would encourage all others to do the same. ozrv, no more responses from you on this thread, please.

Quite simple really Chef. You go to any member's profile and click the "SEARCH USER'S POSTS" button and they all come up, then just copy and paste what they said. Gotta love modern technology! I am especially fond of the one where he made one word posts trying to get to the aspiring musician level. Hilarious! And did you notice how he was a 45+ year Fender pro in one post and 38 years old in another?

Also, BOZO is my favorite! Watched him on WGN for 30 years!

Speaking as one with a minimal presence here, but one who enjoys the sharing of information and fellowship, Brad, I think your approach will have a positive effect on the ambiance hereabouts. Discussion never replaces playing music, but I'm one of the very few Precision players in a small city, and the horizons of the bass players I'm around are pretty limited. This is a useful and entertaining forum: thank you, Brad, for keeping it that way.

Guys: I don't normally moderate threads quite this actively but am doing so now on this one; just did a couple post deletions. We've already established that ozrv's comments are not productive nor contributed to this particular thread in any way.

Where exactly in Texas are you from? (I have some relatives in 'Deep East Texas', just curious.)

Nacogdoches. I have a "Fender" connection, too, however tenuous: I graduated from Cal State Fullerton in late '69. So where are your relatives? -- even "Deep East Texas" is larger than a lot of states.
