Why is it necessary for every single artist to get a signature model, when in reality, it's just another instrument. I can understand if the artist uses some unique modification, special pickups, exotic woods, etc. But all this dude does is take off the tone knob. That doesn't justify a signature model, so the price can be jacked up a few hundred dollars. While I'm a huge fan of Steve Harris, I wouldn't run out and buy his signature bass, there isn't anything significant about the instrument that disinguishes it from all the other standard P-basses.

But, Fender are you listening. Make a Bass builder app, just like the guitar builder, I love that!!!!

I must agree there are way many basses being given to artists now a-days than before which has promted them to go up and down the ladder of quality to make room for them on the market.
It was nice when the artist models were 1/2 the cost of the US standard(Geddy 549.00$,S.Harris 450.00$,Sting 549.00$,M.Dirnt 599.00$ prices from guitar player catalog)ETC..now some are over a grand in price while some are 349.00$ and so many are just color variations or brand of pickup differences that seperate them .....!
Which in turn feeds the corporate machine of higher costs due to heavy sponsorship,How can they keep prices down when paying sponsorships to waaaaaaaay many players(not just bassists either),DONT BUY'EM! Lets all make our own sig models after OUR fav.bass,WHAT we need not,WE already have them, they are called OUR basses and mine are perfect for me.(corny advertisment moment AWwwwwwww.)

Actually I think Brian Wilson was first with the VOLUME ONLY control setup on a P-Bass back in the mid 60's. I think he broke off the tone control. Whether that was on purpose or by accident I don't know, but he never bothered to have it fixed that I know about. Then years later came Timothy B. Schmit's signature Carvin model with a volume control only by design. After that came the Mark Hoppus Jazz with no tone control. So ditching the tone control isn't exactly an innovation. Everything runs in cycles...such as the return of pickup and bridge covers and disappearing tone controls.

Those prices were a LONG time ago! The US $ exchange rate vs. the Yen didn't fare so well. The Sting is now pushing $900 street price and the 51. What is a Guitar Player Catalog? When I bought my 51 RI P-Bass in 06 it was $649 street and the Sting was $699. Near the end of the 51 RI run it sold for MORE than the Sting and I never figured out why, but gave it lots of thought. It would have to be demand vs. supply.

I think Fender does try to keep many artist basses, namely the ones that appeal to kids, in the affordable class and many of these are MIM. The specialized models that appeal to older more seasoned players are often the more expensive vintage reissues like the 50's/60's/'70's series, the US Vintage series, and Road Worn models without artist endorsements required.

Ah, Matthew. So many things go into the awesomeness of the live sound. A band can sound like dirt if the sound tech is a dimwitted monkey with spasms. So much more than the instrument itself goes into the sound. Hell, the BAC of the artist may very well play into it as well. If you know what you're doing, you can get a very very similar sound to what you want with a very varied setup. I'm a big fan of Steve Harris' sound. I play a Std Precision thru a Rumble 15 and nail the sound with a little tweaking and a small change of finger position I have something that isn't quite it. I understand that you have your idol and would love to have him commemorated with his own signature axe, but looking at the Artist Series, the men (with maybe the exception of Mark Hoppus and Mike Dirnt) are behemoths of bass.

Matt, while these guys you mention are the bass players of popular punk bands, with some commercial success. I think you miss the point. Popularity does not equate to being a skilled, talented muscian. The other artists with signature models are icons who have been successful for decades, and many are very capable of creating wonderful music in diverse styles. Never has anyone claimed that punk musicians are on the whole considered to be gifted musicians. Some are, but the style has always focused on emotion and message, not musicianship.

In Mike Dirnt's defense, that is a really cool artist model. Even if he isn't exactly a versatile player that is a great instrument. Ensenada does an especially great job on his model and on the 50's P. I've played them both a bit and like them both a lot. MIM instruments came of age a few years back.
