Google is "celebrating" Freddie Mercury's birthday today. I'm really trying not to picture Freddie at 65. Anyway, John Deacon has always been a favorite of mine and contributed much more to Queen than he's been given credit for.

In the age of real time media, thank goodness we don't have to see John in his Magnum PI shorts on stage   Definitely one of the most under rated bass player out there.

I realized how good he was long before I picked up a bass,as a drummer I was connected at the hip with whom-ever I was jamming with and really noticed a difference in complexity and feel when we would do QUEEN tunes,he was great at following the melody and even better when he was just being simple,he knew when NOT to play, which is'nt always the easiest thing to WANT to do,we all like being noticed or looked at,but not as much as the singer or geetarist does  .
Its all good regaurdless of ones style,if you feel it then play it,if you dont feel it then dont play it.

All the musicians in Queen were top notch. If I had to pick a weak link I could not find one. With most bands you can find one. But musically they were (are) all very sound players, even Freddie's piano playing was not too shabby.

PLUS 1 :?: ? :?: ,THATS IT ? I thought it should have been at least 3 or 4 LOL!
BTW He had really great tone as well,he was heard through the mix without sacrificing low-end tone and being too thin in the mids,Quit a feat to keep that good tone and still be HEARD through/over/under/between Brian Mays taperstry wall of guitar playing(another great underappreciated musician).

The way he used to come up with all those bass lines without "stepping on" anyone else's parts, to me it's one of the hardest things to do in a band. And to accommodate the kind of musicians that were in Queen, I can only guess it must've been even harder.

I also admired him for the way he chose to quit playing after Freddie Mercury died, saying there wasn't any point in doing anything lesser, since it was clear Queen wasn't going to get better with anyone else singing.
