Some times I think about stuff. Yes it's true. Today I'm thinking about how there are certain year basses by Fender that I just don't see for sale, just don't see, don't hear that anyone has one, don't know much about, and I don't know why this is. I know that's alot to think about and it hurts my head too. But still I wonder............there may not be any reason for this and there may be some things I don't know ( 1 or 2 things). Has anyone ever come across this? One of the years is actually one that I own but it's the only one I've seen around. This could all boil down to the fact that I don't get out much.
These have to be out there.
Here are the years of the Phantoms
1953
1954
1974
1980
1994
Do you have any years you just never see any of?

I've seen many 1994 basses. I know a friend owns one and plenty pop up on sites such as eBay, particularly Japanese models. Other than that, not so sure.

1963 P-Basses are scarce here in Wisconsin as are all Fender basses from the 1965 transition year when CBS bought Fender. They might be plentiful elsewhere, but not here.

I used the word hypotenuse once, amazingly, it pertained to the majority of the basses mentioned. I know some of them have been sold to a little known foreign power who plans to sell them on the black market. A lot have been placed in time capsules that won't be opened for 100 years.

The rest have just been hiding under beds.

I can certainly understand that...I'd hide under a bed too, if people were tossing around the word "hypotenuse" so freely!

Maybe I should have left off the 94 but I haven't come in contact with any. The older the more rare I guess. The years that are well known around this neck of the forrest--- 51 ( everybody knows about these)
54 ( strats of course)
57 ,59, 62 , 72, 82, 96,98

tons of 03 and 05 Mex basses on craigs list (overall)

others I don't hear about-- 04,

It seems this is one big country and World- With all the guitars and basses etc produced over the years everyone should have a couple .

Is the plural of hypotenuse, hypotenese? The only reason I'm asking, some guy in an old truck had six in the bed.

I have had 2 1950's P Basses one in the 1990's & one recently. The 1990's one was a 1954 & the one I had recnely was a 1953. The '54 was blonde blackguard countoured body bass. It WAS GORGEOUS. Back then my metality was everything was for sale I was doing a side business dealing guitars & basses which, by the way, the internet & ebay killed in 2002. I also recently had a 1974 Jazz natural. So I have had & seen a few basses in the years you mnetioned.

How did ebay kill selling vintage stuff in 02?

I have not seen any 74 basses other than the one I have. I've had it since 79. Although it is a very good sounding bass it had some factory issues that were glaring when I got it. I took care of the probs but it has some things on it that are not like every P bass. I guess they still cut and fit and sanded those all by hand back in 74. I guess I could look in the book.

Funny you should mention that. Actually Japanese investors were buying them left and right until about 2008 when their interest waned. Somewhere in Japan is a cache of vintage Fenders like you would not believe. Will probably show up on the Tokyo version of "Antiques Road Show."

First off, the 1974 natual Jazz Bass I had was a boat anchor & since have found P basses are more to my liking. As far as dealing, everyone who offered me a bass or guitar would want top buck after seeing what people were ASKING (not necessarily getting) for a similar item. Being a resaler I could not pay what they wanted. When I began dealing in the 1980's tons of instruments came out from the closet & under the bed. People who had taken a few lessons then quit. I got alost of cool clean stuff. I think my inventory was around 50 pieces at one time. I think if I had been a full time dealer I may have been able to keep it up but being part time with a demanding job & the primary bread winner I could not do it full time & people turning to ebay became more & more the norm. So my spare time was devoted to practicing & playing instead of beating the bushed for pieces. My business name was "Classic Axe". I really enjoyed the time I did it. I have a few group photos of item I had I'll post one tonight.
