I saw a horrible beat up bass neck, probably made in Japan. The neck was dated 1980. The country of origin decal was scratched off. The neck was really hacked up and had an obvious butcher job done by one of the owners of it. The Tuner holes are 3/4" in size. I am sure somebody bored them out, rather crudely.

Why would anybody make the tuner holes that large? Was it probably a goof or is there some later year tuners that have bushings that large, or a bass tuner that needs holes that large?

I have seen basses/guitars altered for reason's other than playability, they are made into clocks,hat-racks,music-store signs,bar-signs and anyother function one can imgaine and even Art deco found use for the tortured parts of a bass/guitar.
As far as intended use I dont think I have ever come across a tuner shaft NEEDING a hole that large,BUT I will go out on a limb on this and say I have seen an auction on E-Bay for a neck that someone oversized the headstock tuner holes for the reason of thinking they need be that large for the US designed ones that are slid in from the back but are secured from the front w/6 side(hex) nut and washer, NOT with the 4 tiny screws(or 3 depending on..?)going through the tuner plate then into the back of the headstock(the usual style found on 90% of basses).
This Bozo being un-familiar with basses in general thought the holes needed to be made the size of the hex nut, when the original size was sufficient,Now I cannot say for sure this is the exact SAME reason this happened ? NO ! But its the only one I can compare it too and the only plausable one I can imagine that fits a PLAYABILITY reason,Why else playing wise COULD it have been done :?:
:(

Ill bet someone put super long scale strings on it, and figured out the strings wouldn't fit into the holes, so bored them out to accommodate them.
