my first post! i picked up a Hard Puncher sometime in 2004, and realized how terrible the tuners were after a year or so of playing.

i want to get nice tuners that are not necessarily the most expensive, but something better than the cheapest. because i have a fender copy, can i replace the tuners with something from fender without problems?

any help is appreciated.

Some of these I've seen have machine heads that mount with three screws with two at the top corners and one at the middle bottom. If you are going to use Fender tuners you'll need to do some drilling on those. Remove one to measure the hole and get Fender tuners to match the shaft hole diameter. You will then have to drill guide holes for the Fender tuners, possibly just the bottom two. Others I've seen were either modded already or came with Hipshot tuners. I've never done this mod but I agree new tuners would it more stable. From what I've gathered, Tokai was actually making their own tuners and getting an exact replacement will be dang near impossible.

Stick with the original ones, this is my area of exp(excuse me BroDave) SEE MY NAME,LOL!! seriously they are great tuners the ones 2 screw top 1 bottom design, they are even able to be adjusted for tension,is the bass mint?if your a stickler with a vintage bass(what year??)then stay with originals, but if not the large back replacements with the Fender script will cover old holes but....?
Drop me a line, got any pics? I just mounted a vintage set to my tele p-bass neck,I got them off a 100.00$ Memphis p-bass copy,If it were sooner I would have sold'em but there mounted now,I see them on a bunch of Japanese vintage used bass sites, not hard to find because almost every Japanese NON-Fender used the 2 top 1 screw bottom pattern tuners(Yamaha,Tokai,Memphis,Greco,Aria,Ibanez ETC..)I like them cause they can be adjusted, are your broken, old or just want new? if too lose can be tightened.
