Suppose I had several chunks of the same kind of wood. Is there a way to determine which piece would provide what kind of tone? Or even if it would provide a halfway decent tone?

This is a theoretical question, just to educate myself. No flames, please. Respect everyone's opinions. It is possible to disagree respectfully.

Looking forward to learning lots! :D

A little bird told me it was your birthday today! Happy 29th!

To see resonance tap a tuning fork, place the butt immediately against the wood near the center of the front. If it gets louder and sustains longer than on other pieces, that is the one. "A-440" works for me and they are fairly common.
