DANG IT!! Does'nt anyone like GHS compressors ? They are like the best thing since sliced bread,I am still stumped that more people dont use them,I would never use another string again if I had a constant supply of both money and available strings.
They have the perfect thump for a P-bass and the Tonal variations perfect for a Jazzbass and last a looooong time, mine are close to 1 1/2 yrs old and still sound as good as they did on the 2 week of using them, and low tension for those thinner Fender necks making for a great playing bass.
I still use flats,I got a set on my P/J bass I'm re-building,its without a jazz pickup so its no big deal w/flats but once the jazz bridge pickup shows up then we go from there and a set of Chrome flats on my US 03 p-bass.

All of my basses are strung with Fender stainless flats (45-95).

Try Nylon Tapewound strings. They give a great flat sound, last a long time, and are very easy on fretboards. D'Addario ETB92.

I had LaBella black nylon tapewounds on my '51 RI. They gave it a really nasal sound, which I didn't like. I loved the look, though: it looked like a Black&Decker bass (the P is butterscotch). Ultimately I put the Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats on, which are on all my basses, except for a recently-acquired Godin A5 fretless, which has the factory-installed flatwounds on it.

Where nylon tapewounds shine in on acoustic bass guitars. I put them on an Ibanez AB305 and a Martin B-1 and they were a big improvement over the clangy brass strings they came with.

I went with GHS Precision flats on my Am St PBass.... and I could never get myself to put rounds back on it. If I had a Ric or Jazz bass maybe I'd put melllow pure nickel rounds on that to have a bass with rounds. But not my P!! I'm going with 100 80 60 45 as a better balanced set of Precision flats (had to buy the strings as singles) than the boxed sets. IMO everything sounds better on flats. Pick style sounds even better on flats. I'm using 10's in my cabinet (tweeter horn off) to help more tone definition too. Myabe I'll get the TV Duo 10 over the 1 15 Bassman!?

I can't say I'm fully aware as I've only tried the Chromes (and still do!), but from what I know, the TIs are much lighter in gauge and have very low tension, which most probably contributes to their distinct, almost upright type sound. I've heard them being used and they just sounded great to me.

Chromes have a fair amount of top end at first, and I generally label them as flats that work well for most music styles, including rock and beyond that. That's probably just me.

+1

I have tried to like TI's as they are great sounding strings, but I hated the light tension. They feel like rubber bands to me. I have a set of chromes on my P-bass, and I like them. Not as stiff as the old Fender 9050ML, but much better for me than the TI's. I may try a set of chromes on my J.

They are in fact the lowest tension metal strings I've ever used. I still use them but only on one bass. Guitarist I play with loves the tone. He wants me to always play that one. Me, I think the GHS Precision REGULARS sound the best. But everyone has their own idea of how a bass should sound.

This is the P Bass forum.

P Basses and flats are a natural combination.

Personally, I use TI Jazz Flats.

While I currently use 3 brands and types on my bases, I would have to agree with the guys quoted above.

If I could choose only 1 set of strings in the world for any of my basses, I'd go with the Chromes.
