Arguably the most popular, best selling basses of all time, Fender USA continues to deprive left-handed players the option of a maple fretboard (let alone finish color.)

Yes, imagine a world where you cannot purchase a Fender Precision nor Jazz with a maple fretboard.

Fender offers maple fretboards (and more than 2 color finishes) on their left-handed guitars, but basses not so much.

Arguably the largest, most successful, best-selling, iconic bases of all time. Fender is often credited as the inventor of electric bass.

Potentially, every left-handed bass player or collector around the world would line-up for the opportunity to finally own an American Fender bass with a maple fretboard. In this Internet-powered, e-commerce world, I reject the theories that there would not be enough interest to justify a profitable production run and/or they would not sell.

I post this thread like a message in a bottle.

Please, Fender, Maple

Cheers!

I found what your saying a bit hard to believe so I went to the on-line catalog and my collection of Fender catalogs past and checked this claim for myself and I must say I am very disappointed that you are totally correct in your accusation that Fender indeed does NOT offer maple necks in 90% of their basses  .
I can only suggest that you buy the Maple necked bass of your choice and flip it and make a "lefty go righty" which is a right handed bass flipped over and restrung as a left handed model, the only mod is the nut,it may slip right out and be flipped over to allow the strings to be reversed,OR go buy a right handed maple neck, have to nut reversed and put it on your existing bass.
These trickes have been around since the beginning of the guitar/bass revolution and have been done by many professional and amature musicians back when there were NO left handed guitars/basses being made so their only choice was to do what is necessary in order to play, even Jimmy Hendrix had his all right handed guitar's strung for his left handed playing style and even when he was given complimentory guitars he asked for right handed models which he then re-strung left handed.
Have you tried the custom shop ? they can build you any model in any color with any pickup configuration out of any wood with any kind of neck desired,or better yet try Fender Japan they have over 100 different models that are not imported here, check them out you may find what you need.

Thanks for keeping me honest, lawsuitbass :-)

That number is more like 100% from Fender USA and it has been that way for years.

Neck-flipping comes with a bunch of negative baggage such as side dot markers on the wrong side, E-string length/tension issues, additional cost to obtain right-handed bass/neck, etc.

Fender Custom Shop starts at $3500 USD for a bass that would otherwise cost $1200 USD as an MIA Standard.

I would really just appreciate the choice of a maple fretboard on a bass from Fender USA. There is no substitute, nor is there any reason for this issue to perpetuate in 2011.

Cheers!

Charlie_Z,

IT's a terrible thing that Fender discriminates against left-handed people. We will take up your cause!

Calling all NICP International members! There is oppression and discrimination abounding! Sharpen your swords! Fill your seltzer bottles! Inflate balloons!

Leo Fender rolling over in his grave now that clowns have more sense than the management in Corona, CA

Well done

Now surrender your right-handed Fender basses to me and we'll let Malachi decide the fate of the outlanders!

Malachi just texted me. He's in Latrobe watching the Pittsburgh Steelers at training camp. He said we could handle his light work.

Excellent!

While there, see if he can reclaim Rolling Rock Beer from Anheuser-Busch and tell them to shove it where "they all float" :-)

Cheers!

(... and I still want my left-handed, Fender bass with maple fretboard, just so you know)

We will champion your cause to get your left handed Fender bass, we will NEVER back down until justice is realized!

The Rolling Rock thing was an atrocity!

Ah, yes! They'll float, everybody floats, eventually.

Although lefties make up ~ 10% of the population, this makes sense. Fender should do an annual run of left hand basses to satisfy demands.

Thanks Sir I do stand corrected,I feel your pain as I can RARELY ever find a maple neck model myself when I am in the market for a new bass myself,I will not EVER purchase a bass that I cannot play unless its a used/vintage item that I cannot find locally.
I very rarely see brand new Fenders with a maple neck in any of my local stores and even less in the used bass section,I PREFER maple/maple necks and had to settle for rosewood fretboards on both my Jazz and P-bass.
I can deal with a rosewood on my jazzbass,it has the tone I prefer and the timeless look I love but I dont nec. dis-like r/wood on my p-basses but prefer the snap of maple against the dulled thud of flatwounds they compliment each other,if it was'nt for the fact that I ended up getting a 99.99% brand-new American Standard p-bass(rosewood  )for 475.00$ I never would have bought it,but it ended up being one of the best playing/sounding Fenders I ever owned PERIOD,so I learned something that day(compression wounds on a r/wood fretboard help the bass sound like a maple neck w/flats :D ).
Goodluck Charlie(did you check Fender Japan ?,they got some killer basses)

Thanks, lawsuitbass!

Although I hear Fender Japan "perhaps" has the basses I want, I do not wish to take Fender USA off the hook here on this injustice, LOL!

Cheers!

It is discrimination! However, there is lots of discrimination by all sorts of manufacturers against southpaws. In the bass game it isn't just Fender either. Ever check how many Ibanez basses come left handed?

Anyway, it just makes sense to offer them. Why miss out on 10% of the market? If they are looking for a way to sell a bunch of instruments fast, that should be one way to do it!

NOT FOR NOTHING THOUGH,HOW FRIKIN HARD COULD IT BE TO MAKE MAPLE NECKED BASSES IN LEFT HAND MODELS ? IT'S NOT LIKE THEY DONT MAKE LEFT HAND MODELS AT ALL,THEY HAVE THE NECESSARY MACHINERY TO MAKE LEFT HANDED BASSES WITH ROSEWOOD FRET-BOARDS SO WHY NOT PUT A MAPLE FRET-BOARD ON THEM ? WHATS SO HARD DANG-IT!
Sorry about ranting like a lunatic but its true,I myself have settled SOOOOO many times for rosewood when its not at all what I wanted,Writing this post made me realize how often this has happened to me,both my US Fenders are rosewood and though they are great basses and am glad to have them I would ABSOLUTELY prefer them with a MAPLE fret-board(more so with the p-bass but...)but HAD NO CHOICE but to settle for ..?
So I can only imagine your disappointment with NEVER having the option of buying a production model bass OF YOUR CHOICE with the maple/maple neck, and should'nt have to resort to modifying a right handed one to play lefty or pay out the arse for a custom shop model or seek out an aftermarket neck ETC....it should at least be available to us by special order if stocking them in a store is'nt an option.
HOPEFULLY A MODERATOR READS THIS POST TOO AND PASSES ON A SUGGESTION(doubt it) GOODLUCK
