I bought some 1970's "F" neck plates without serial numbers that were NOS. They have the round Fender inspection stamp on the back of them.

Another seller was selling "F" neck plates they claim came off instruments back in the late 70's. When asked about the inspection stamp the seller said they didn't have the inspection stamp.

When did Fender apply the inspection stamps? Why do some plates have the stamp and some don't?

Somebody please shed some light on this confusing topic.

...no sure if i can fully answer your question(s)....the stamp i used on the Final Guitar Line and occasionally in other areas, was a round stamp- with FRR (Fender-Rogers Rhodes) on the outer edge and a number in the middle.
I can't speak to the 70's as i didnt start until 80 and didnt get into inspection/setup until 81. I would guess though that the plates with the stamps were 100% inspected, while the others were probably not. The reasons vary---sometimes parts products are "sample inspected" (AQL) and depending upon the quality of the inspection, they either continue to sample or go 100% if defects are found.

Good to be careful about authenticity though...good on you!

cheers,
rob

Sorry I was out of pocket. Mr. Schwarz gave a better answer than I could have anyway.
