I'm starting this thread especially for novice guitarists who may not have as yet dropped a guitar, so they can get some first hand info from those who have. After seeing some nasty stage crashes with straps popping off of the button mounts on expensive axes, I converted all of my basses to the Dunlop Snaplok system over 10 years ago. These rigid mount fasteners are just the ticket for aggressive guitarists who are really animated on stage and they allow for rapid strap change-outs if needed. I have also tried the Schaller variety as well, and while both do the job, the Dunlop system seems to be a bit easier to work with and has a better locking capture system to keep things in place under rigorous conditions.

Anyone who has dropped a Strat when the strap let go can attest to the fact: "that ain't good."

Anyone have guitar drop experiences and if so, have you gone to the capture style of strap mounts? Which system do you prefer and why?

Thanks...

My lovely ladies only use Dunlops. It just seems like a more sturdy set up to me. Having read reviews for the Schaller style, there were far too many "then it suddenly dropped" situations because of the cup like design. The Dunlops use a completely surrounded pin with a very strong and simple ball-lock system that is very easy to keep oiled and working. Just my two cents.

I used the Schaller ones for a while, then switched to a strap so well made that I don't think I need strap locks. Anyone else ever use Italia straps? I know the Schaller won't work with the Italia straps but don't know if the Dunlop will or not.

Sorry boss, all I've ever used after my first crappy nylon strap was Levy's leathers. They've always been sturdy and the right price. Ever since I found their tri-glide line, I've never even given another thought to another brand. They're leather straps with a nylon strap type adjustment. Stays put, but faster to adjust than the traditional leather. Combined with the Dunlops, I'm a happy man.

I have tried both and after only a few times using them I was sold on the Dunlop style locks,My first set were ancient and were the type that were all the same diameter from the slightly beveled top to the bottom, alot of the "old school" players would have the body drilled out to just a hair larger than the strap lock is,then the button part is counter sunk to be even with the basses surface with just the beveled top part showing.
I think it looks cool to have the straplock's beneath the surface of the bass out of sight its not really done anymore because the top of the straplock's are now wider than a regular strap button and is to much to drill out to accomodate a larger button piece,I do believe they started making the older style ones again to keep up with the whole "vintage" movement. :?

OR you can do what B.Sheehan does which is take a car body sized bolt with a matching washer and a non-stretchable nylon strap then drill out the original screw-holes large enough to get the car bolt started, then put the bolt and washer through the strap and into the body(a little glue wont hurt)tighten it down snug being careful to not split the body, there you have it: a strap lock that will not move even if you wanted it to.
OR go uber Punk and substitue the car-bolt or strap-lock's for a roll of duct-tape,then proceed to using as much tape as needed to secure the bass strap to the body, wrap it around the bass as you deem necessary,if loose then proceed to step one and repeat.

Only problem with Duct Tape is that the stage lights dry it out after several gigs and it falls apart....LOL...

on the warwick i have to use the dunlop bolt-version (no other way to strap it) on the strat the common schaller and on the new preci i've got a such tight leather-strap that a straplock is not necessary.
for live-stuff straplock is ok, but in a quite place the connection has an undesirable clack and squeak, i often play without amp just to get the pure sound of the axes.
guess the dunlop and schaller are not interchangeable...

I assume the Dunlops are the ones that have the button you push in and the little ball bearings (looks like) inside the shaft release the lock from the button? Okay I had those on my 74 P bass for alot of years. They wear out. 15 years or so and the input side didn't catch. I thought it did. The lock on the top horn slipped out and the strap came off. This happened twice. Bass did not hit the ground. I bought another set and used the strap part only. They work with the old buttons now. After that I used Schallers. I was glad when Fender started using those on the basses I have now. Not sure about 2011. I don't look at new basses much anymore. I get in trouble when I do that. Oh- I've used Schallers for about 15 or more years and have never had a problem. Yet.

These are the exact straplocks I was trying to describe in my posting that when done correctly look great but for the anal retentive bassist its a modifacation that cannot be reversed.

I use the little Jim Dunlop LokStrap 7000's. Very simple, no drilling and screwing and otherwise messing around with the instrument, and so far (x-fingers!) never a moment's worry. I love these little things - and they're so cheap you can carry spares - not that I've ever needed to replace one...

I've always used Levy's leathers with Schallers and the damn things are so tight I've never had any failures. The only issue is that you have to make absolutely sure that you have the straplok all the way on so that it locks down. If you're not careful you can think it is locked but because the leather strap is so thick it might not be all the way locked. If you feel it click, it's like a rock then.

I've never had my Schallers go loose because I use tightbond glue on the threads of the locks that go on the strap and I put the glue on the screw threads when I put them into the body. The tightbond holds very tight. They can be removed whenever I want . The glue does not weld the parts- it just secures them very well. I've been doing the glue thing for 10+ years- not one problem ever.

Whats the first thing I buy for any new addition to the Bass arsenal? A set of schaller strap buttons.

I once had a '78 Precision fall off its strap and hit the floor Headstock first - split the wood from the nut right up through the headstock..

Although it got repaired very well by an awesome luthier here in Wales, I never looked on it the same way  and ended up selling eventually....

Dunlops on both my Strat and Tele...

Was playing the Tele one night, before the straplocks, and just as I strummed, the strap let go! Luckily I caught the guitar with my left hand and pulled up on it just inches away from the corner of a heavy wooden crate! It would have seriously dented if not cracked the Tele body at the angle it was going to hit! Next morning I went out and bought the Dunlops.
