This question might seem like a no-brainer to some, but I'm a little split between a MIM Fender Precision bass and a Squier P-Bass, I'm 95% sure i'm going to replace the pickups (I'm looking for more of a cut-through the mix Mike Dirnt/Pop-Punk tone, I play picked with a Thunderbird atm)

So I am wondering which would be more advisable to buy? The MIM Precision or the Squier? (I'm pretty sure I'd be more proud to own a Fender, but what do you guys think?)

I owned a Fender Mike Dirnt Artist Series P-Bass for several years and the bass was already set up essentially the way that you are mentioning.

If your budget will allow a couple hundred extra, the Mike Dirnt Artist Series P-Bass might be just what you are looking for without having to do all the modifications, expense and labor to convert something else.

It already has the 1959 style Fender Custom Shop pickups and Leo Quan's BA II bridge.

Its a great bass the MIM verion that is,the neck is hefty and a little much for a beginner or someone used to a thinner neck like an Ibanez or T-bird,the Dirnt neck has its advantages though, heavy gauge strings dont really affect it much and is more durable,.
I am no fan of the MIM line of basses but I really liked mine,I was eventually going to put a maple 51 re-issue neck on it but I sold it before I could.
g/luck

I agree. The easiest way to get the Mike Dirnt tone out of the box is with the Fender. BUT the Squier version is OK however you'd need to figure on $200 for upgrades at least. With the Fender you'd need no upgrades. Also if and when you get ready to trade or sell you'll get way more for the Fender.

I'd play several, in fact as many as possible, before deciding. A lot depends on how you want to use it. Gigging outdoors, I'd rarely if ever take the best bass I've got.

I own a 96 Squire P bass Special (lefty). As you know, there's not much out there to chose from for us lefties, unless you can spend boutique dollars. P body, slim J neck. Put in some SD quarter pounders, red tortoise pick guard, and to be honest, it's my main bass. (I own 12) It sounds better than my Carvin and my Ibanez's. Save your money. Play as many Squires as you can, and pick the one that just feels right. You can always modify it later. Just one mans opinion.

Hi all
I tried all 3 models of Squier Classic Vibe (50's, 60's and JazzBass), and I have been impressed!
The neck is in all cases very enjoyable with a nice finish, and the sound is very close if not the same as Fender basses.
(I have both Fender JB and P)
These Squier are great value for money to me!
Now, you have to admit it doesn't have the nice Fender logo... :D

I keep hearing this and its gotten me interested. A Classic 60s P in Fiesta Red is gorgeous. How does the neck play and feel?

Actually the current and most previous Precision Bass Specials have a P-Bass body, P and J pickups and a Jazz profile neck. The more recent ones are active. The Jazz Bass special had a Precision pickup in the mix but everything else was Jazz.

The reason I said P-Bass Special was to get the thinner neck. The Mike Dirnt neck isn't exactly a baseball bat either.

i've got a squire p-bass, i modified it and completely redid all the wiring, so the only thing thats even squier any more is the body and neck... i even replaced all the wiring LOL

but i mean thats it dude the squier basses are really good guitars.

squier has a bad rap when it comes to stratocasters, but the basses are actually good quality i've got a '98 p-bass, and a '08 jazz bass, and i love them both.
