Exactltly right grh050, overlooked, under appreciated and snubbed. Good thing bass players are rational, sane, mature and introspective. We can handle these types of situations.

For all of the greatest songs out there, isn't it a coincidence that the bassist's were people like, Jamison, Radle, Dunn, Babbit, etc. How many people other than bassists actually knew their names?

So true. Not to mention Osborn, or a Carol with a last name of Kaye.

Couldn't agree more guys.
Everytime you hear a song with a "make ya wanna move" groove....thank the bass player.

Here we all are, over a year later, and still spanking the plank. I have a new band, Tommy and the Jive Tones, and we play music written before I was born (and, while I'm not older than dirt, I knew him when he was a kid and a lot of trouble to his mom).

We're building repertoire right now, and so far have got together Ain't Misbehavin', Pennies From Heaven, Over the Rainbow, Is It True What They Say About Dixie*, Candy, Exactly Like You, I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter, and we start tomorrow on Java Jive.

Five members: guitar/lead vocals, percussion, me on bass, and two backup singers. The guitar player is 81, I'm 70, the percussionist will be 65 a month from now and the combined ages of the singers is 52!

But the music is challenging for this ancient rocker....

I re-read this thread and realized I had posted no pictures. So here's one of me and my old racer (you can tell by the tires and drum brakes how long ago it was) and a more recent one of me and my main squeeze, a fiesta red Classic '50s P.

*A friend heard us announce the title of this song and said, "Yeah, I know her, and it's all true."

Congrats lpdeluxe on your longevity at the bottom end.

Experience is the one thing that can't be taught, substituted or shortcut.

Here's a great aphorism, which I endorse: "Good judgment is the result of experience, which is the result of previous bad judgment."

You know I may have originally posted somewhere about why I play bass and it may have been awe inspired and all good and whatnot. I needed to say why I play bass.

I have thought about it now for 2 or 3 years and in all reality I must say I play bass because I"M STUPID!!!!!!

WHY on Earth would I want to pick up a heavy combersome instrument that no one wanted to play only to find how hard it is to play and it made my stinkin hand hurt? Why would I subject myself to being un-important in most band and playing situations other than to be the guy that plays bass that nobody cares about and is the first one to get dumped every time from the band? WHY? WHy would I play the bass and spend years to try to accomplish many Jazz riffs/ and theories only to be told to hold someones JACKET??
Why would untrained Karaoke singers all agree that bass can be done by anyone, even a trained fish??? I do not know. All I can say about why I play bass is=== I love being stupid.

SV -- I must disagree with you about the bass being hard to play. Yeah, it is heavy -- ya got that right!!!

However, I have recently started working on the guitar (I have not previously played guitar -- I started on bass), and IT'S FREAKING CRAZY-MAKING TO PLAY!!!!!!

I love my bass ... especially in comparison. :D

I started on guitar (before you were born  ) but I almost exclusively play bass (and the occasional Dobro at church) now. Ya know what? I love it. We had a rehearsal on Java Jive and Girl from Ipanema today land the guitarist was struggling with all the changes. Me? I could cruise from note to note without breaking into a trot.

I started playing guitar when I was 11. Took lessons for a few years and had a guitar teacher tell me I had no sense of timing. By age 15 I was jamming with friends and the other guitar player (we consisted of 2 guitar players and a drummer) said, we need a bass player. Jerry why don't you play bass. So I got myself an all blond maple Epiphone bass and never turned back.

Don't know what happened to that bass. In the 80's i bought an Ibanez Blazer Bass, used it gigging for about 8 years back then. Still have it today, along with a Fender P and a Jazz.

I play bass to pick up women. :P No, I'm completely joking, although oddly enough, that's how I met my girlfriend, who is a musician/solo artist that I'm playing with now.

I guess I got into it back in high school when a friend of mine at the time started playing guitar. I was hanging around all of the time so eventually he had the idea that we should form some sort of band. At first, I was going to become a drummer/ percussionist, since we knew someone else that played bass. Needless to say, all I had a tambourine and this person was playing in another band, so that wasn't really working out. Then, in August of 1988 (24 years ago this month) I had this job where I made enough money that I could buy a bass guitar after we decided to try that route. It was cheaper than drums and a lot easier for me to pick up on and learn. I bought the cheapest one they had at the store (since I wasn't even sure I was going to stick with it) and the rest is history. I became obsessed with music and made it my life. I never gave up and I won't stop playing, either.

The funny thing was I had no musical inclinations before that. I was always artistic and creative, though. Before I got into music, I wanted to be either a cartoonist or a writer. I used to dabble in both since I was a kid. I never felt I could fully express myself like I can with music, though. I guess it's just the right medium for me. I will say, I'd like to try to get into doing some paintings at some point, or maybe drawings. I haven't done that in years. It would be a good excuse to go into an art supply store (if they still even exist around here, any more) and shop. I always loved those places.

A sad and common tale but true. I was the worst of three guitar players in 1966 when we formed a band. So I volunteered to play bass. Good choice. I've been playing in the same blues band for almost 42 years with the same drummer. His kick drum and my bass just hold hands and thump down the road together. I love that feeling when the wind from the speakers tries to rip your pants off.

And the women - did I mention the women?
