Even if you could get one, how well would that work out for your job with TGL?

I don't know. I am actually pretty good at the Dijery-doo. I have one of those and a Rain stick. Those are cool. The guys in the band are not used to a dijery- doo they have no clue . To the few who do the dijery-doo i say you too do.

Doc was like embarrased when I played the dijery- doo ---- almost mad at me. He doesn't get out of his box much.

Regarding Dijery-doo's -- if you ever have a chance to hear the Wicked Tinkers, DO IT! They have drums, bagpipe, dijerydoo, irish horn, and a ROCKING good time!!!! No Amazing Grace here.

I play bass because I stopped! I played 6 string from the time I was 14 until I got engaged at 26. Actually, all the members of my band finished college, got jobs and got married soon thereafter. But, I played bass in my friend’s cover band for a little while and loved it. It was just a fun instrument to play. I had a bass that was smashed to pieces at a party while we took a break. The idiot who fell into it, cracking the neck and body escaped that party without being mutilated…

Fast forward 10 years, my friend’s cover band, now a very big act in the area in which I live, had me play bass on stage while he was in the men’s room having “gastrointestinal issues.” I played two old school Metallica songs while he got himself together and it felt great! He has a Fender American standard Jazz Bass and it brought back memories of before I became over worked, married, two kids, owning two companies, and responsible to the point where I didn’t feel like a well oiled robot…

Then this year I’m at a student’s graduation party and notice a Squire J bass in a bedroom corner covered with dust. It was her brother’s who only played it 4 times and it was about to be thrown out into the trash! I rescued the bass. It was one of those Squire Starter packages. So, I bought it for $150 with the Rumble 15 amp and I started playing again. Call it a mid-life crisis to cut through all the B.S.… Now I’m turning it into a custom hot rodded jazz bass! When all is done the only original part will be the body and that’s because I like the metallic blue body.

Here is the happy ending. Our drummer has set up his kit in his garage… Our lead guitarist is on board and I’m going to play the bass. 3 out of five members, we can at least have some fun, our first jam session in scheduled early October. We are missing a guitarist but he is in Iraq and our signer (RIP) died a few years ago of heart failure/drug OD. I have a feeling the singing is going to land on me which is not good…. I did back ups, hard cord metal which means I can’t really sing! I just know how to make noise!

Why do I play bass? It added 10 years back to my life!

I play bass cos it's a beautiful and underrated instrument. Well, it's underrated here in Kuwait. I'm one of only a handful of Kuwaiti-born bassists. Quite sad really.

I was classically trained to play keyboard at 11-13 years old. :D Dropped out of playing music until I was 26. That was 36 years ago. :P My love of music and the recognition that drums and bass are the heart of a band got me going again. Trained myself to play bass and have been playing 2-3 nights a week since (because bass players are obviously not plentiful) Started with a shorty Mustang. :D Now have a trusty P has never let me down. My Gibson T-Bird is pretty good and the Dean acoustic fills the gap around campfires.. 8) Damn..........im AN OLD FART BUT CAN STILL ROCK..... Young people now have a hard time figuring out where R&R came from. No problem here..

My father wanted me to play the accordion when I was around 9 or 10. I didn't like it, but made a deal with him that I would not put away music, but play something else. I chose the keyboard, as I have always liked electronics. I had a Yamaha DX-7 back in the day when EVERYONE had one, and I liked it. I was pretty good, too.
Then I discovered Kiss and Ronnie James Dio and it all went to hell (pun intended).
A friend and fellow fan and I decided to put together a band. None of us had any idea about guitars, but I bought a cheap one and started figuring it out. I never took lessons and never looked at theory until later in life. I got to play decent guitar (mostly rythm) and did that for about 10 years, until I got an offer to play with some really cool local musicians who needed a bass player. I did what many others did - I got a bass and basically transferred my guitar playing skills onto the bass. Then later in life, I have realized that this is NOT always the way to go and that there are so many other things to do with it.
These days, after many years of NOT playing, I am the bass player in a classic rock cover outfit, and loving it. I am eagerly awaiting my first Fender, and I already own an ESP 5-string and a Hohner acoustic/electric bass. Also, a few guitars.
Bringing playing music - and especially the bass - back into my life again has been one of the best things I've done in recent years. I love it.

Garbnobophone, Dijery-doo, and drums with a Rainstick would make a great trio group. Setting the intonation on the Garbnobophone may be a bit tricky though. You have to use a pitchfork (F#). The Rainstick would be a light showers set up. Not a full storm calibrated one.

I can relate to your story. I hadn't played for a years and went out and bought a bass, and the rest is history. It is a great hobby and a wonderful outlet. I'll always play before leaving for work, no matter what time it is.

Somehow I see a bit of ACDC influence in your background, lol.

That's what I like about the Forums! That has been a constant problem, I never thought of the pitchfork, thanks stroker!

Slidewaysracing: thanks for the story. I wondered because my uncles were speedway racers (1/10 mile oval track, cinder surface, spindly, powerful motorcycles -- do a search on "speedway motorcycle racing") where the bikes are set up to go sideways around the track. Sounds insane, but it's true. I myself am an old beat-up ex-road racer (two wheels, also) and references to motor sports always get my attention.

Back to basses: my informal group, Deja Vu, played a theater gala (a fund raiser for our local community theater) last Saturday. Food and wine are available, admission is free, and everyone comes to be entertained and to (one hopes) buy season tickets. We have a lot of talent around here, and there's always a scramble to get your spot on the program. There were five of us: me on bass, a singer/guitarist, drummer, percussion, and backup singer. We dressed up in black, with black berets and dark glasses, and played Me and Bobbie McGee, Runaway and Love Potion #9 to open the show. We were a big hit -- and then the other acts got up and one by one sang their show tunes to piano accompaniment. Too bad for them: they all sounded pretty tame after us. The only drawback was getting our gear off stage quickly. I hope that, next year, we can do a more extended program (I played in a dance hall band for a long time, and we did four hour sets every night. Three songs ain't nothin').

You didn't think we kept SV around for nothing did you?
He be the Man!

See? Now you may believe me and thanks for putting your trust in me to lead you into all things Garbnobophone.

I completely dig all kinds of racing. If I never got into music I may have just been a drag racer.

Another reason is NOBODY can stop me, no matter how much they complain!
