OO! OO! Yeah, yeah, that's what I meant: rhythm AND harmony at the same time! Yeah! And the "engine" thing -- I'm a car fan too ... rumble, rumble. Too bad my RX-8 (and previous RX-7's) did the "hummmmmmmmmmmmmm" thing and not the rumble thing. Although I love them anyway. Zoom, zoom, go fast! I would really love a ride in a F-14D, though.

One day I would like to play my bass through an amp that would vibrate the whole neighborhood (I have a Rumble 25). In some situations, vibration is GOOD!

As a child I got involved in the school music program, playing trombone. I picked up a ukelele when I was 11, learning every Beatle song I could. I actually played in a band in 6th grade with another uke player, doing every British rock song we heard. I was an accomplished trombonist, majoring in music in college, and going on to a minor professional career on the horn. But I always fiddled with the guitar; I loved it.

In the early 1970s I was offered a studio gig, recording a Christmas album for a local singer. The offer was on bass guitar. And while I'd never really played the bass, I could read music, so I took the gig ... and fell in love with the bass.

I've travelled professionally playing bass, done a fair amount of studio work, and am currently playing in my favorite band yet, a blues band. The bass guitar was a natural extension of trombone for me, and has allowed me to do another thing I loved doing but was unable to do as a horn player - sing.

The simplest answer: why do I play bass? Because I can.

Haha. I played harmonica in the orchestra pit on a production that featured a three-piece horn section. After the first rehearsal, I had to tell the trombone player, "I thought I could make rude noises with the harmonica -- you've really got me beat!"

When I was in grade school (early 60's, I'm really old) they gave me a musical aptitude test. I guess I scored ok because they really pushed me to pick up an instrument. Violin and piano were my options. I said drums.

The Old Man said ain't gonna happen. So I went over a friend's place that had a band. Picked up their Olympic White pre-CBS jazz bass. It felt liked it weighed about 116 pounds, but I sat down and learned the main lick for "Time of the Season" by the Zombies.

I was hooked right there...next best thing to drums, right? Luckily I had a couple of part time jobs and saved up enough for a $@! Beatle bass knockoff and some little Radio Shack amp. Since I wasn't allowed to play that at home, either, I kind of moved into my friend's place every day after school or work...he had great musical parents, all encouraging and such.

Within a year or so I was playing in a soul band, picked up a p-bass and a 50 watt Bassman head. The deal was sealed. Oh sure, I still noodle around with guitar and piano but bass was just it for me....loved everything about it and still do to this day. Wish I would have studied a little piano, too, but that would have been too much of a copout. Managed to get into the drums a bit at that place, but bass stitched me up. No regrets.

They're passe' now... You'd rather have an F-22! :)

Nope, I'll ALWAYS be an F14 fan -- go Navy! That and the SR-71. Zoom, zoom! Go fast, play hard, live to the fullest! :D

(hope this post isn't the kiss of death to this thread)

When I was a kid I just seemed to key on the bass lines when listening to songs. By the time I decided I wanted to play an instrument. It had to be bass. It was not to fit in a band there was myself & a drummer friend of mine before we added a guitar player

Guitar is still my primary instrument--and I play bass because I was told I had to.

Sort of.

I started on bass because I took lessons and they also had a band/combo program--where you would play in a rock band--so I wanted to do that--part of the prerequisite was that you also take bass lessons--in my case it didn't mean extra time for lessons--I alternated weeks between bass & guitar for a couple of years--then went back to just guitar--but I did the bass lessons (It did cost my Dad a bass and an amp--but the amp was better than the one I already had) I was a reluctant bass student--I just wanted to play guitar--but I had to do it if I wanted to do the band thing, and my parents were willing so there I was, taking bass lessons.

I never played bass in any of those bands, but I played it on my own in a variety of settings--and I kept playing it.

I'm no bass virtuoso (Nor am I a guitar virtuoso for that matter) but I'm decent--and it is fun.
