Women are attracted to women bass players only in the event that they need someone to go to the bathroom with.

I played a gig on bass last night with the Jive Tones and I gotta say, I loved it, they loved it and the audience loved it. That's why we do it, right?

Bass just feels natural to me. Every other instrument I've played other than guitar feels awkward and uncomfortable, and even then guitar doesn't feel as good to play. With a bass I can really get into the groove and just have fun with it. I've been playing for less than a year and I've learned a ton! I can't seem to get enough of it :D

I know what you mean. There is something about those low frequencies, too. I do admit, if I could, I'd love to play all kinds of string instruments. Banjos, sitars, ouds, zithers, dulcimers, pedal steel, you name it. But bass is the main thing for me. I've had to play guitar live before and I felt awkward with it.

Four fingers. Four Strings. It's not as easy as it looks.

Very true!

Knowing WHAT to play, WHEN to play it, when NOT to play, how to play "in opposition", how to MOVE the song along, requires great artistry.

Yeah, you're right. There's a lot of guitar players who could also learn this. :P

A good friend, with whom I've been playing since 1981, and who inspired me to play bass (he was the bass player and I the lead player in a long-ago trio) told me, after I had spent a couple of years in the bass chair in regularly gigging band, "Your guitar playing has improved a lot since you started playing bass."

These days, it's as though lead playing doesn't do enough. I'm playing in a 5-piece (percussion, guitar, bass, lead and backup vocals) doing old pop standards from the '20s and '30s, and I get to do the beat, and the lead fills, and the turnarounds, and the intros and tags on every song. In addition, we play in keys to suit the vocalist, which means E flat, for example, or F# as it lays out for voice. This is as much fun as I've had in music, especially since I'm working with a really talented percussionist.

That sounds like a fun gig. You should have some Flappers to make it complete. That would be cool. I've always had an interest in that era, too. That, and the 40's. For some strange reason, I find that time period very familiar to me.

The group is comprised of local community theatre participants, so dressing in '40s hairdos and dresses for the ladies is a natural part of the act. I'm sort of on the periphery because my involvement over 31 years has been as set designer and poster artist, while the others frequently appear on stage.

We haven't done a photo shoot, but here's a blurry pic from our last gig:

What no doghouse? Just kidding. I LOVE that Classic 50's P you play. They are such killer basses. I just got to play a Roadworn 50's P at our local shop in Sunburst on lunch and it breaks my heart. I don't want to throw it on a card as I'm almost out of debt. (well, minus the Jeep and Mortgage :? ) The only way I could swing it would be to sell my 51RI P...it's such a dilemma. I love them both, but I know I'd hate not having the Single Coil option. However, that nitro broken in neck is just to die for. I hate decisions like this. In reality they are both good enough to be my ONLY bass, and I'm totally cool with selling my parts P bass to help with the purchase. However, it's just making that commitment to only one and having to choose between the split and single coil. :(

I couldn't do it. I've got a '51 RI, the Classic '50s AND an AV '57. Each one has its voice and its role.

Agreed. I had a bass with the Duncan Vintage Raised A pick up in it that I've regretting selling. Not the bass, but the pick up. I love the way the raised A sits in a mix compared to the 59 and 62 pick ups. (though i love them, too) There's just something about it. It's bouncier and more aggressive in the mids but without being overbearing, imo.

My ideal stable would look much like yours. A SCPB with flats, AVS 57 with flats, and something like a roadworn 50's P or CS59 but with a maple board with nickel rounds. There's just so many great P tones to choose from. It weirds me out a bit when people say they can't tell the difference between the pick ups in different P basses. Even in a mix I can tell a Raised A when I hear it.

You've got a great stable there, man. I'm really envious. Perhaps it's time to exercise a bit more control and do it the old fashioned way. Get a coffee can, sell the parts bass, and slowing start rolling change and putting gig money into it until I can buy it outright. That's how it should be done anyhow, right? :?
