How did Fender deal with sloppy neck pockets on the production line? Did the guys building necks pick a body then custom shape and fit the neck so it would be tight even in a sloppy neck pocket?

Were neck pockets cut more accurately in the early 1970's than in the late 1970's?
I ask because I have a Fender Precision body 1976 or earlier with a very very tight neck pocket. I am wondering if that means the body could be an earlier model?

I want to paint the body but I can't find a Fender 1976 Color Chart anywhere. Does anybody known where to find the late 70's color charts or at least know what the common colors were for 1976?

The CBS neck pockets are often a hot button topic. I can't answer exactly how they got a good fit on some and not so good on others.

I can point you to a scan of a 1976/1977 Fender color chart though. Click on the link in my signature which will take you to my resources page. Scroll down and click the RED link for INSTRUMENT HISTORIC DATA. Once the Historic Data page loads, scroll down to the section titled VINTAGE GUITAR COLORS. Then click on the link for 1976/1977 FENDER COLOR CHART. There it is.

The key to consistant fit over the life of a guitar is all in the wood long before its made into a guitar/bass,Everyone hoots and hollers over the basses that were made in Leo's time at Fender and the reason being is the wood he used was usually over 25 yrs old already(a book on early guitar/bass building its from)so you have a wood thats 25 yrs old that will not shrink.
The drying/aged/seasoned of wood dictates what happens down the line, everyone who is into Fenders knows the later part of the 70's-80(81 :?: )CBS cut any corner possible and the first being quality of the wood, the worst necks and the fitting of them into the body are the swan-song ending of the CBS era, using green wood is cheaper and as it dryes/ages it shrinks(ever play a crappy bass that the fret-tangs stick out the side of the f/board?thats wood shrink).
Its not that they put a body and neck together that were a poor fit(I still would'nt put it past them)its the wood shrinking over the years, and the other thing asked was the necks are usually a touch larger than the pocket is,they use very light sanding of the neck equally on both sides until its a tight fit.
