Normal ?whats normal ? Is normal Jaco pulling his frets out and sealing the neck with marine epoxy ? is normal L.Graham having too make percusive sounds on the bass while making the strings snap against the neck because the drummer was a no-show and some type of percussion sound was needed for the gig ?
The duncan pickup guitar pickup idea is similar in a way, it too is stepping out the box and trying something different and on a passive guitar/bass there's no chance of damaging the electronics(unless the person overheats the pots w/soldering) being there's no power going or coming from it.
The hotrail fits in perfectly and is the exact same size and shape as the cheesy pickup that comes stock(japan are NOT known for quality p-ups)and the rails allow for each strings vibration to be balenced, opposed to the original design with the little round pole piece's that rarely ever sit exactly down the middle under its intended string.
Its almost unheard of to see each string to sit directly in the middle of a pickups pole piece perfectly(go look,I'll wait here)now would'nt two rails located across the width of the pickup allow for a equally balenced tone ? I think so.
I would never recommend something to another musician that I myself have never done or would'nt do myself,This was recommended to me from the luthier I was apprenticing under which who is in fact a licensed Fender warrenty repairman,I am not in the habit of blindly using mine or others qualifications to get a point across, I am just validating my reccomendation which to some may seem "wierd" or improbable of working but please know that I also questioned its validity and was'nt sold on it at first, but I am glad I did eventually listened.
goodluck
Take it or leave it,its what I do when seeking advice and you could always try it if everything else fails

Abnormal is putting a guitar pickup in a bass. That's why I was wondering if a regular Tele bridge pickup would work also with it's 6 pole pieces which would be similar to the rails. I still need to know if the rail pickup you are talking about is a Tele bridge pickup?

I completely understand what you are saying in your posts. I'm not against anything you posted. I hope you didn't get that impression. After 40 years of playing bass- then I start thinking about putting a guitar pickup in one of my basses-- well I just continue to think and question--thinking maybe I can come up with something even more far out than that! HA!

I have a whole bunch of basses. Some the strings do line up dead on with the pickups. Some don't. In fact the bass I use at gigs (50+ a year) - the strings do not line up directley between the poles. So I know that's not a big deal.

I actually saw Jaco play and I even talked with him on the street one morning a long time ago. The guy impressed me in that the way he played was way beyond normal ....and when I saw his hands up close- the length of his fingers didn't look anything like normal. HA! .....He was a striking character.

I'm still thinking about wiring direct to the input jack and that's not very usuall. I'm also thinking about a regular top load Fender vintage style bridge or a little beefier aftermarket bridge that I used on my Telecaster bass that's a string thru.

Actually, it is the location of the pickup in Sting/51 re-issue. It is not ideal for picking up harmonics, being too close to the neck. A Jazz Bass, for example: you can get better harmonics with favouring the bridge pickup.

My advice (IMHO etc.): don't ruin the bass with modifications. I've been there too many times with regrets. For the cost of mods, in the end you could get a VM or CV Squier Jazz and they come with the harmonics built-in.

I could never ruin a bass with modifications- I hope. That's not what I'm all about. I've done alot of stuff to basses only trying to make them better or more to my liking or more to my specs. It's all good and you would not believe the dough I've dumped into guitars. It's hideous and I don't think about it...much! HA!!!!

Thank you for the friendly advice but I have always had this thing or flaw about certain brand names. The first brand that I shy away from is Peavey. There are others too. The most recent one is Squier. I just can't wrap my brain around it. It doesn't appeal to me at all. So that's just me. If I go get a guitar it's usually a USA Fender Bass or Strat or Tele. Recently I aquiered a Roadworn P bass. I have come to love the Roadworn. That's a Mexican guitar with Dimarzio vintage pickups I put in it. SWEEEEEEET !!!!! I had Mex guitars back in the 90's that I deemed to be way inferior to the USA's-- mostly because of basswood bodies. Okay that's just another thing I shy away from the basswood. I know Ernie Balls are basswood-- the Bongo etc.. that's all good. I don't think I'm picky just seasoned into what works for me. Now if Squier comes out with the bass from Hell with a basswood body and the sound just melts your eyeballs and makes you float up off the ground-----I could go for that. Let's just Rawk out.

I'm still getting good response and having enjoyable banter. What else could you ask for on this great site?? Fender all the way man!!! YEEEHAWWWWW!!!!!!

Yeah in escencse (spell check) I've dumped on Squier and Peavey so I'm sure it's a possibility haters may come and put the munjobwi on me for that. I don't hate. If I was to hate I'd be a hater and I ain't that, a hater. So stand by we may need to derail my own topic. I hope not though. I want more talk on the finer points of rippin and tearin into a bass.

That's where I'm at on it.

That was the line of thought that inspired my reply. But let's move on. Do you hear the harmonics when you try the bass acoustically? I should think that they are there, but the pickup does not hear them, and that is mainly because of it's location.

Yes I hear the harmonics (I have always called them that BTW) and I think you are right with the bridge placement thing.

I have installed another bridge and am starting another topic Sting Harmonics part II Bridge install with pictures
