I purchased a standard Mexican made P-Bass in December 2010. It was new. I've had no problem with it until last Sunday. I played it on Saturday and had no problem, then put it away. I picked it up on Sunday to play and had no sound at all, no volume. It is not the amp or chord, my other basses play fine. Has anyone had this problem?

That is not common at all. Since you bought it new you should have warranty coverage. If you bought it at a local dealer, take it back there. Or if in North America you can contact Fender Consumer Relations and they should be able to advise you.

Just letting everyone know about what has happened with my P-Bass. Took it to the tech. at my local music store. He had done work on other instruments of mine with good results so I felt comfortable with him working on it. He checked and cleaned the electronics and said everything was OK. I brought the bass home and tryed it out. Same problem, no out put, no sound! So I returned it to him. This time he replaced the volume, tone controls and jack. Also re-wired. Brought bass home. Guess what, NO SOUND! This lasted for approximatly 12 minutes. Then after turning the control knobs a few times the sound came back and the bass is playing like new! My problem is what has caused this, I'm a working musician and I'm worried that the bass may just stop working in the middle of a song. Could the problem be the pick ups ?

Just curious - Were you present IN HIS SHOP when the bass was being tested on an amp after repairs??? Don't take someone's word for a repair - test it yourself before leaving the shop and give it a good workout to eliminate the possibility of intermittent conditions. THEN, if there is an issue at home, you can check your cord and amp.

Clean the cord plugs with rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth just to make sure no gunk on the plugs is restricting the guitar to amp signal. A buddy of mine was finishing a gig last year and as he disconnected his Strat, the cord ended up in a pool of spilled Pepsi on the stage floor. He didn't catch it right away and as that mess dried, it gave him symptoms similar to yours at his next practice session. He was able to clean the plug and salvage the cord, but it was an inconvenience - so proper cord handling is always a good idea.

Ok everyone thanks for your input on the problem with my P-Bass. First I've owned and played Bass guitars for over 30years. I've never had a problem like this one. I've tryed other jacks with no luck. When I put the bass away yesterday it was playing fine. So I thought about this a little. Every time I had the problem the bass had sat overnight for approximatly 12 to 24hours. Could the pick ups be loosing their magnetic pull? It was just a thought. Went I came back from work this evening the first thing I did was plug in the bass to see if it played. Remember when I put it away it was playing fine. What happened? No Sound, no output! So with out touching any controls I took a small metal ruler close to the pick ups to see if there was a magnetic pull. Well I was wrong, there was a pull and the ruler was pulled to the pick up. Here's the strange part. When I took the ruler off the pick up, the bass played normally! Right now it's playing fine. Going to try it tomorrow to see if it still has sound. If anyone knows, I live in Northern New Jersey. Anyone know a good Fender repair tech. in the area? I really like the guitar. I just want to get it working right.

If it was a NEW instrument it was covered under warranty. I don't know if what your tech did voided the warranty or not. Go to the Fender SUPPORT tab and find the nearest authorized service center. I'd contact them and ask them what to do or take it back to the original dealer and ask them.
