Today I was opening up my flight case for the 60th Anniversary bass when I noticed this on the maple frets - at first I thought it was a scratch and a pretty damn big one, but when I get up close and look at it - it looks more like part of the wood grain just being a lot darker. I can't feel any edginess on it and the finish looks to be over on top of it evenly - is this just what they call like "curly maple" or something??? Should I take it back to the dealer? I really love how this bass sounds though - I'd hate to have to bring it back and get one that doesn't quite sound the same.... if it is a flaw in the wood will it eventually crack the entire thing? You opinion guys - please ..... I don't know enough about the woods and grains and if it's even a scratch or not.

Come to think of it though - when the guy was restringing it at the store he put his hand on it and ran his hand down that area as well - but I didn't think much about it at the time.

True - kind of like an "identifying scar" on the body when they find you dead lol. The more I look at it the more it looks like it's just the wood grain - up by the tuners it's almost the same color in a few areas but not as dark as the one inbetween the strings.

The only reason why I was alarmed was both my other P Basses are rosewood not maple so I've never really looked at a maple fretboard before.

Hi MJ, totally normal. I don't think it is a crack. A crack would be abnormal. Grain isn't abnormal.

There....now that the matter of the grain has been settled, there's just one thing left to do.....

Shouldn't that knob have an 11 on it? It stops at 10, so wouldn't 11 be louder?

Never look a gift maple horse neck in the maple mouth because it may go against the grain and birdseyes may fly over it. Now if that doesn't make sense about the gittar neck in question... well... I just don't know what does bless my soul. If that bass is finer than frog hair then I would just keep on to it cause you only go round with gusto one time in life with a bass find only one. If you hear tell of a better bass think twice and don't stop believin' cause red lights turn red and green ones do to. What the hell do you think of that my friend?????? Oh yeah-- don't forget- if your head catches on fire- run real fast. signed Uncle Zarn (Strokers cousin who got him the Colonel Jakes' Foot Spray- That Stroker is a great guy !)

Please excuse my cousin Uncle Zarn- he got on the site somehow without me knowing it. SV

Its hard to tell from the pic but if it bothers you that much I would go back to whenst it came and have someone who KNOWS what they are doing look at it and determine if its nothing but an imprefection in the wood or a stress crack that needs attention A.S.A.P.(I really doubt the latter of the two).
Maple usually has alot of imperfection lines some are a dark brown looking line/lines some are a barely noticable at all,I have seen cracks in the headstock starting at the E and going all the way to the end and through the face of the headstock remain stable and play for 20 plus years so its not a death sentence, but for the cash they are now I want perfection dang it!
Dont worry,it'll work out
