A seller on ebay sold two bass necks that were obvious fakes. They are taking newer fender necks and making "vintage" necks out of them by using after market decals, fake numbers, and aging.

The one neck was really worn on the fretboard. Somebody sanded the finish off the fretboard to make it look real road worn. What gave it away was the fact that the screw holes in the heel of the neck that were factory fresh and never had screws put into them. You have to wonder how the neck got so worn if it was never installed.

The other neck that sold has what seems like an aftermarket decal on the headstock. The serial number on the heel seems to be wrong too. There is a "6" in the number series on the neck that should have been a "3".

Also I didn't notice any wear patterns or dirt like you would get from being in a neck pocket for 30 years. They are also missing the white lined stickers most of the fender necks have. They are also missing the circular stamp that the fender necks from those years have. It does look like they are trying to fake the circular stamp now. Look out for any neck that has J. Torres on it. Another trick is they are aging the truss rod nut or they are replacing the new one with an old beat up one.

Buyer beware! How often does someone try to authenticate a used purchase on the Fender Forum that turns out to not be what they thought? Nearly everyday.

NO YOU NEED TO BE....Sorry but thats why I learn as much as possible there are a few easy spotted tell tale signs to look for,yes decals can be faked but not well, serials can be re-etched on the neckplates,I have seen tons of J and V letters added to serial numbers of regular Japanese Squiers and Japanese Contempory models(jazzspecials, power jazz etc..).
The best way to avoid this is to either NOT buy of the net OR buy from a reputable seller or ask someone(US)to look at an auction and see what we think,I have never seen one good enuff to fool me and I'm no expert 100% of the time but just enuff to avoid a scam, there's people here who can rattle dates, woods used, serial differences and even the names of many of the workers who built them or non matching numbers for perticular years etc...PLEASE ASK!.
BTW: This has been going on for a loooong time, nothing new here but as PT Barnum said"there's a sucker born every minute" Just on this forum alone I see at least one or two postings a week asking the famous question"IS THIS A REAL FENDER"? and sadly its AFTER the auction, after they paid and after they looked at it at home and were concerned or suspicious about it,And I proceed to tell them these are IMPORTANT questions to be asked BEFORE and not after. what are people thinking,if I was a sleeze I could make a fortune on fake Fenders but I am honest even though I am barely over the poverty level robbing others is wrong!
