I had a brand new G&L JB II -- kind of banana color and tinted maple neck- 2 J type pickups- just a beutifull bass. Like B. Dave said some are good some are not so good- Mine was a USA. It sounded good at home but on the job it didn't come close to what I was used to. The notes kind of blended together- not much definition and it was kind of weak. I was extreamly let down - I paid alot and had it on lay- a- way and thought about it every day before I payed it off and got it. Then the depression came. Needless to say it's gone.

He was probably so cranky, Mrs. Sabre put him down for an early nap.

Also, in my area there's almost this attitude that a P bass is the only thing for country and roots music - I think Timothy B. Schmidt and millions of Eagles fans would disagree.

Actually the original bassist for the Eagles was Randy Meisner. He played a Hagstrom Futurama and a Fender Precision. Before being a founding member of The Eagles he was a founding member of Poco.

Timothy B. Schmidt came from Poco to play bass for The Eagles after Randy Mesiner quit in 1977, so in 1998 both Mr. Mesiner and Mr. Schmidt got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as Eagles.

Also Timothy B. Schmidt is also known to play a white Carvin bass in addition to the sunburst Jazz.

What do you mean, "almost?" I came up playing lead, and the only time I played bass was when the bass player wanted to scare everyone on guitar. He'd hand me his J, and off we'd go. It was a very nice J, a rosewood fingerboard early '70s with a walnut finish. I went along for years, never thinking there was more to bass than that. Then I got a full-time bass gig, and started playing my Carvin LB20 with Jazz-style pickups. Pretty soon I got a G&L L2000, which was a lot better sounding. Then one day I played a P, and that was the end of everything else. I showed up at practice with a new Classic '50s Precision in fiesta red, and two bars into the first song, the whole band turned around and said, "THAT'S IT!" I'm now equipped with a '51 RI, an AV '57, and a natural ash MIM with a maple board, and I'm pretty happy. The Jazz is like an old girl friend from high school: a lot of fun back in the day, but nobody you'd want to be married to.

Besides, I LIKE chunky necks: my hands cramp up on skinny ones.

Great post--- the Fender P bass is like no other once you get one that really has that one honkin sound to it-- the "ring gut" punchy smooth growly tone- you know what I'm talking about....unfortunately not all P basses get that tone. I've had more that don't have it than have it. I ain't kidding on that. If you get one that doesn't have that sweet tone to it-- forget it- get rid of it-- no matter what you do you will not get that sound if it doesn't allready have it. It must be the mojo tone or no tone at all.

That's it - don't want to hear it- it ain't hannin' and I ain't changing my mind. Been there done that way too many times. Keep on searchin' and don't throw away money on mods if that Fender P bass doesn't have the honk when you get it stock. That honk comes from the old days of Fender. Fortunately it carried over into modern times. The super honk would be a pre 65 P bass-- now that is something. I'm sure not all of those had the "one" golden sound but I bet more did than didn't. Sorry to ramble on but I loves me some good ole fashion P bass Tone monster golden HONK!! OH YEAH!!!!! Image

Oh yeah: gotta have pics. Here are the '51, the Classic '50s and the MIM when it had a fretless Warmoth neck:

Here's the '57, with a long-gone Hartke stack (it got traded in on a Mesa/Boogie):
