Its an alder precision body with a thinner jazzbass neck and a bunch of different tone options from thier active pick-ups.
I played a few they were alright,I really dont like active electronics it looses something in the mix and am also not a huge fan of the MIM basses though I am slowly finding they have been getting better in quality over the last couple of years.
What exactly are you wanting to know?there is alot of information available on some of the other sections of this website,do some research right on this site untill you get a few bites on your thread, also every major web store(musicians friend,music123,guitar center)there is a review section for every bass known to man and you will get a honest review from people without any outside obligation, and all the sites have a review page you can also just type the basses name and the word review and there they are.
g/luck

The Precision Bass Special is Fender's greatest ACTIVE bass value in my opinion. What you get for what you pay is nothing short of amazing. They are rugged, nice looking, fairly simple to use and play fine when set up the way you like. An amazing array of tones for the money.

Like my Japanese zealot friend (Lawsuitbass) I prefer passive basses for home practice and gigging because they are more reliable, less expensive usually and I can fix anything that goes wrong with the electronics myself. Where the actives shine brightest and are most useful in my opinion is in recording or in RFI noisy environments. With judicious use of effects in post production you can make an active sound like about anything you want.

Some players prefer actives for gigging. Especially fusion, slap, pop, tap, thumb, palm muting type players. It is just what you get used to I suppose, but I prefer the ORGANIC sound of Alnico pickups with a simple passive EQ circuit. If I could have only one bass, it would be a passive.

When you consider the MIM P-Bass Special is half the price of the USA P-Bass Deluxe, you begin to see the value in it.

In my opinion most of the MIM stuff was not as bad as some people make out. I saw a player named Victor Marlowe rip up a mid 90's MIM Standard P-Bass in a country rock show last weekend with up and coming recording artist JEFFREY ALLEN EDWARDS and it sounded awesome. This band plays The Bowery in Myrtle Beach, SC frequently which is sort of a launching pad, but I saw them in Columbia, SC. Victor Marlowe is a good solid pocket player and I enjoyed it a lot. The white Strat-type knobs were a dead giveaway to the early MIM origin. After the show was over I managed to talk to him about that instrument and examine it up close and he claimed it was totally stock other than the strings and he'd never changed anything else.

Disclaimer: I am a relative newbie bass player. I own one. I chose it because I thought that the 2 different pickups and the active electronics would give me a convenenient range of tones in one instrument.

While I'm satisfied with the tone, I was disappointed in the "fit and finish". The control pots are not very high quality and the edges of the frets were noticeably rough. (Andy's Guitar shop in San Diego put new strings on it recently and, without my asking them to, they polished those edges smooth.)

I have had a couple of professional bass players compliment the tone, so I expect that I'll be keeping it, even if my "gear acquisition syndrome" leads me into the path of temptation towards a higher quality instrument.

Thanks for the responses, had a chance to play 2 last weekend , one at GC really needed a setup, second one at SA was setup before display and felt amazing, I like the feel of the jazz neck which is why I am looking at this, I have a mia jazz bass now but want to add a P bass, this looks like a good value as you said, I think I will try to play a few more before I decide, thanks again

Well if you want a P-Bass that sounds like a P-Bass you might do better with a passive P-Bass. This to me sounds like an active cross between a P and a J. Not quite a J, not quite a P either, but an instrument with a unique range of tones. They do sound good.

Rough fret edges should be addressed at setup when you purchase an instrument.

I have one of these, and in the 2+ years that I've had it, I've had the truss rod adjusted 3 times (including initial setup after getting it new) + a quick tweak (by a tech). I have the feeling that I'm going to need to get the truss rod adjusted regularly (at least once a year).

I'm not hard on it (I don't think), and have the action set quite low so it's easier for me to play. It sits out on a stand, and is kept in tune. I play it every day or at least every couple of days, and it stays in tune quite well. I live in southern Calif. where the weather doesn't change a whole lot (not like humid summer vs. dry winter in the midwest).

Newbie questions: Is it normal for any bass to need neck adjustments every 9 - 12 months? Is it perhaps because it has a "smaller" jazz neck? Might I have a poor quality neck? Is it because the bass is only a couple of years old (I'd have thought that it would have settled in by now)? Or ??

Thanks for whatever info and insights you can give!

That is not unusual or out of the ordinary at all. I recall at one time a very long time ago heard that you should do it after the change of each season. For those of you in LA or Hawaii I don't know when you are supposed to do it. But seasonal changes do effect necks.

Slideways, it depends on the age of the bass. If you buy one new it may need adjustment a couple times a year, but once it stabilizes it should need adjustment less and less frequently. My '96 Fender lives on a stand, tuned to pitch in a stable environment, and hasn't needed adjustment in well over six years.

Thanks for that info.

I really enjoy playing it. I’ve found, though, that I pretty much leave it set with the “P bass pup” selected fully almost all of the time, although some of the time I set it for an equal mix of the neck (“P bass”) and bridge (“J bass”) pups. It’s very rare that I dial in mostly or only the bridge pup. I’m guessing that means the next bass I buy is more likely to be a P bass than a J bass. :D

Another interesting thing is that the controls definitely change the sound, even with dead batteries. I have no idea what that means, other than I save $$ by not having to replace the batteries, and if I were gigging I wouldn’t have to worry much about the batteries dying. Actually, I don’t hear a great deal of difference when it has fresh batteries and when it doesn’t. Somehow that doesn’t seem right. :( Maybe it’s just my ears.

On these Fender bases the pickups are passive (not preamped, powered pickups like EMGs, for example), but the tone controls are powered so you can both cut and boost frequency ranges. I would expect that they would still CUT frequencies with a dead battery, but would lose the ability to BOOST frequencies.

I'm always surprised by how often bass players will wax poetic about how much more "organic" (as if there was ever anything organic about an electric solid body) there "passive basses" sound.... When, in fact, if you aren't boosting frequencies with the tone controls on a Fender "active" bass, then you are playing what is essentially a passive circuit. My MIA Precision Deluxe has a Fender Original 57/62 P-bass pickup, and with the tone controls set flat that pickup sounds just like it does in any Precision.

Regret to say that I am too uninformed to speak intelligently about the controls. What you say about not being able to boost makes sense. However (open mouth, insert foot), the controls do seem to have an effect no matter which way I turn them "off of center".

It plays, & I like playing it, and I can mostly get the tones I like. And it's pretty.

However, thank you for the info. I do like knowing these sorts of things, learning new stuff, and becoming a more educated being. Keep the education coming! :D

Happy eve of the eve of the eve of Friday Eve!

Slideways, please take the battery out of yours and let us know what it sounds like. I think it will be completely dead. My 94 Cowpoke was.
