I was blown away  (well thats a little harsh, suprised is much closer to..)to see the BlackTop bass being sold for 499.00$ brand-new  ,I did'nt think they would be in the same range as the Mexican Standard models.
I know some stores or internet companies vary in price but not in the hundred denominations,I would have guessed about 600.00$ on the price is right if asked and again it which makes me wonder just how well made these little "gems" may be and how good OR bad they sound.
If there's anyone who has played one or has one of their own yet lets get some feedback and also PICS :!: please  if you can ?
THANKS PEEPS!

Have heard a lot of good things about the Blacktop guitars, they're MIM so that explains the price. Went looking for them and found none in or around Pittsburgh.

Sorry I did not mean to derail the thread---uhmmm..... The Blacktop basses are black and they are made in Mexico. They have a price of around 500 dolernos and you can buy them at the music stores but not in Picksburg. So let me know . I may go check one out at the Guitar (day care) Center down the road from Sam Ash. I am so pumped.

The Blacktop bass you mention is a Jazz fitted with dual split-coil P-style units. The Precision is a completely different beast as it uses a pair of Bill Lawrence-designed J-style humbucking pickups.

Blacktop doesn't necessarily mean a black finish. The term is generally employed to describe the black cosmetics and the ferocious vibe of the humbuckers.

That is correct and I thought it was a mistake and the photos got switched at first. You would have thought that pickup arrangement would have been the other way around.

Still looking for one of the P-versions to check out. If buying one I'd want the white, not the black.

Blacktops are MIMs, though I believe Fender will also release USA-made versions of that series, featuring a 22-fret neck and an active/passive circuitry.

A USA Blacktop bass is essentially an "older" American Deluxe model with a dual humbuckers, HMV bridge and an active-passive switch with an extra passive tone control.

Unlike the MIM Blacktops, USA Blacktops will be available in 4, 5-string, fretted and fretless versions, featuring a maple neck option.

USA Blacktops sound intriguing too. Guess I'll have to wait. Bill Lawrence is a genius and I really look forward to trying one!

I'm starting to think I'll see a Dominator before I see a Blacktop!

Wonder if I could ask a couple questions about these.

1. What do the pickups sound like? Are we talking a "middy," vintage sound but with a lot more power, or are we talking more of a modern/hi-fi sound with lots of bass and lots of treble?

2. Do the pickups have adjustable pole pieces? If not, are the pole pieces at least factory set to take into account the neck radius?

Thanks in advance......
