Hey all!
i have recently acquired a 95 MIM LPB Precision bass from a friend. pretty good deal. looks great sounds pretty good EXCEPT. the A string makes a horrible rattle and buzz eminating from the nut area. its seems putting tension on the string behind the nut helps, but after restringing it with three winds, it still doesnt seem to help. any suggestions?

Does the string fit pooly in the nut slot ? it could be a sloppy fit or too tight of a fit and the string is'nt sitting far enuff down in the slot,I always wrap the strings as many times as humanly possible to be sure the string is sitting a far as possible in the nut slot will allow.
It can also be a high fret too,but its only 1 string huh ? also try to tighten everything that can be tightened, like the screws on the bridge, the tuners screws(the one large one on the ring gear also can can vibrate loose) the string tensioner thats on the D&G strings has a screw also and for good measure the 4 large neck plate screws as well(prob not the culprit but...).
Post a pic of the headstock if possible and the whole front of the bass too if you can, lets answer some questions, does it happen all the time,is the neck adjusted properly(not enuff relief can cause buzzing),is it in a perticualr area, open string buzzing only, fretted string only, string height accurately set and was it set-up after purchasing ?
A good set-up (should)usually clears all this up if you are'nt experienced enuff to do it bring it to a dealer, store who offers them, where you got it or a teacher are options,I always recommend a full set-up on ANY bass new or used, most basses even when new can use a good set-up and a DETAILED fret level(makes any bass play 100% better)can also do justice to even the best of made basses.
These are the things I was taught to look for when I started working on basses some time ago, they are not full-proof answers but should make your bass be on the way to playing and soundidng its best, pics can help to visually determine anything blatent so the more you offer us the better we can assist you.
Goodluck.

I know this is gonna sound NUTS! Bear with me though.

Take a matchbook cover. Tear off a small piece of it about the size of a Tic-Tac mint. Loosen the offending string. Put the bit of matchbook cover UNDER the string in the nut slot. Tune to pitch. If that cures it, the nut slot is too deep. This can happen when changing string gauges, types, etc. If that is what is going on then the sure cure is a new nut setup specifically slotted to fit the string size you want to use. That would entail seeing a really good tech or going to the Fender Service Center if under warranty.

Nice isolation idea,I had people bring me their bass complaining of a mechanical buzz(not electronics)and found one or more of their tuners being so loose you could have tightened the ring-gear screw by hand or the height adjustment screws missing with the barrel just hanging around also I had one bass come in for a rattle/noise and noticed some brain surgeon had inserted the D string through the intonation screwhole and the intonation/barrel screw was put thru the string hole then went and installed the string barrel up-side down,I could'nt find the rattle LOL!!.
Depending on the time playing I always recommend checking each and every screw on a regular basis, the bass vibrates which makes many of the screws loosen up and once loosened they vibrate more and more,so going over them and taking out 5 mins will help you learn the bass parts and what/how they do and eliminating rattles, you would suprised how easily or quickly they start to loosen up,get to know your bass it will only make your life easier.
