I just noticed the hiway one is gone from the P Bass list. I hope they dont think the overpriced American Special is gonna take its place!

Good- to me the H1's are of lower quality ( blow) overall.

When the HW1 first came out they were cost effective at best, they were barely nothing more than a glorified MIM standard.
The necks were not made with the graphite re-inforcements,they were the same ones as the ones used on the MIM deluxe models complete with the trus adjuster at the headstock and not at the bottom of the neck like all the other MIA Fenders.
The finish was terrible and was way to easy to damage,I took all the finish off mine with a scotchbrite pad in 45 mins, thats just too cheesy for me :| .
The originals were'nt equippted with the Badass II bridge(original vintage style)or the 70's decal(not that a decal is worth anything)so other than that....?
At one time it was 300.00$ in difference in price when the HW1 was 600.00$,now they are 900.00$ or so,thats 100.00$ less than the American standard model, why even bother ?.
I would go with the Japanese basses being exported now for 600.00-700.00$ you can get a bass as good as or possibly even better than the US made ones selling for 1100.00$ . Its a headache buying gear now-a-days :?

The American standards are $1200, the H1 is $750. I have never had a bad mexican fender or american fender. They cannot possibly be as bad as people on here say.

Although for a few bucks cheaper, the Aerodyne Jazz is a great deal to me.

Aerodynes have come along way, there's alot of new models and designs and color options and even pickgaurds now too.
They were at one time only available in black, now they are available in chrome red, dolphine grey and vintage white too and with or w/out pickgaurds also, some even have dot position markers on the fretboard face and not just on the sides like before.
They are better than the HW1 models and probably the Am. Specials too but not the US standards though,I would'nt go that far but I will say that there are alot of Japanese made Jazzbasses now avail. and for their much lower price I would stick with them over the HW1 models and on down from there, quality control is more consistant and much more reliable when purchasing sight unseen.
Thats only my opinion, and mine only and is'nt meant to sway a purchase either way,do your own investigating to get the best results for your personal needs.

The American Specials have taken the place of the Highway 1's. Yes they are that bad. I really had high hopes for a Precision in Red with a maple neck. Went to Guitar Center and was badly disappointed. The finish sucked, the frets were sharp and stuck out, the pots were noisy and the neck felt lousy. I played both Jazz and Precision basses, I found 1 that wasn't too bad. Since then I went back and they were even worse.

Fender is using all their garbage wood to make Specials just like they used "seconds" to make Highway 1's before.

Fender has become a big corporate machine cranking out products en masse. It's only gonna get worse.

I tried to like them. I drove about 100 miles to a truck stop to meet a guy and buy my H1 Jazz with case. I was all excited for awhile and then it set in that my H1 was a "Tone Dud". I started adding this and that and doing this and that-- finally I bouhgt a neck and made the Aqua Jazz using the H1 body. WRONG it was still a "Tone Dud". The best thing was when I traded my H1 Daphne P bass to a guy for the Garside one off custom bass that just turned out to be very good. Check it!

You told us about the Garside before and I believe I've heard it on your album. Fletch, what happened to the rope?

Tone "Dud's" are not always noticed but are much more common than people think, not every bassist knows how to change their own strings or do a set-up nevermind trouble-shooting a bass not as "tonefully gifted"(lack of a better term)as others basses are.
Not every bassist even learns a scale interville nevermind what a chocked off tone or a deadspot in its neck sounds like ETC....,some just doodle in the bedroom or put it on a stand and use it as a coat rack untill someone forces it to be sold on e-bay or the local flea-market etc.. and never get diagnosed as having a tone-dead body.
I had a customer with a brandy-new "re-vamped design" MIM jazzbass with all the new style "full range bi-pole pick-ups" and alder body opposed to the basswood made ones from the yrs before,His complaint was;it had no "life" to it and no tone or no sustain either, it was just "dead" regaurdless of the amp used or tube style or...nuttin doing,DEAD.
So we put in 62 re-issue c/shop jazzbass pick-ups and a badassII bridge and even reverse wound tuners for the cool factor to go with the little brass gounding strip from the bridge to the bridge pick-up just like we all saw on Jaco's bass of doom, and you guessed it BETTER :D ,but still not what it should have been.
I did a fret-level and installed a newly cut graphite nut just to cover any other basses missed(basses, get it :?: )changed the pots and did the cloth wire thing switchcraft jack orange drop tone capacitor too and strap locks just in case, all this helped but it still was not even close to what all these mods should have added up to,I consigned it to the store I hung out at and in less than a day the local "know-it-all" bassist fell in love with all the bells and whistles it had(and the new pickgaurd I added too was the clincher) and happily paid 700.00$ for the "best bass he ever played" and It probably was"the best playing" but its tone projection was another story,my bud still lost money but did m-u-c-h better than I thought he would re-couping his losses(and I still had to get paid too right ?)
