I just picked up a 1995 Fender Precision Special "Cowpoke" with active electronics.
Can anyone supply a diagram or tell me what the controls are?
There are two stack knobs, the front inner knob seems to be volume for both pickups.
The outer knob seems to blend the pickups (with a center detent that indicates both are equal
volume, I roll it toward the neck pickup (P-Bass) and the back pickup (Jazz) goes away and
vice versa.
My problem is the rear knob...the inner knob seems to be a tone knob. The outer
ring is dirty and ineffective. Is it a boost knob? There is no detent on this knob.

Thanks,
Mike

Welcome to the forum.

The MIM Cowpoke uses the same Kubicki-designed 2-band preamp as the Precision Bass Plus Deluxe.

Electronics consist of two stacked control knobs for volume, pan pot, bass and treble.

Thank you Chromeface! I have found quite a bit of info about the bass but almost
nothing about the controls.

Hi,

I am new to the Forum. I just picked up the same model Bass and was unable to find any User or Service Manuals, also a description on the use of the active controls would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ron

Hi and welcome to the forum.

The active tone controls are controlled by a dual concentric pot.

The top knob is for the treble and the bottom ring for the bass.

There's another concentric pot for the master volume and the dynamic pan.

Hope this information helps!

John

Brother Dave....do you know anything about this?

Yes I do.
I had one of the active ones for a few years in see-through blonde.
The first answer about the control layout answered the question so I put up a photo of a little cowpoke as a joke. :D

Now the thread is back alive like 8 months later. LOL.

I have a diagram somewhere about the controls but as noted it is the Kubicki layout. From superior to inferior as I recall the controls are VOLUME on top/blend on the bottom and Treble top/Bass on the bottom. If one isn't working it is either a dirty or bad pot or the preamp is out of whack. If a pickup was dead it wouldn't make any sound when blend was rotated toward it and if the preamp was dead then the bass wouldn't make a sound.

Unless you have a pretty decent amp, you may not notice much difference between the pickups in the extremes of the pan/blend rotation. Part of the reason for that is the preamp colors the tone from the pickups.

This is a pretty nice bass if you like the Jazz neck profile and one of two I regret letting "get away" from me. It was well balanced and a breeze to play. Usually I'm not a big Jazz neck guy. In addition to sunburst and see-through blonde (white) there was the dyed wood finish in both see-through red and blue. Very rare Fender color treatments and I liked the colors a lot.

The Cowpokes shared the same preamp and controls as the P-Bass Plus Deluxe but lacked off the Lace Sensors.
