I don't know who's familiar with MarloweDK on YouTube, but I wrote him the question I'm about to put forth, and he told me to come to these forums.

Is there any difference, sound-wise, between a Precision Bass and a Jazz Bass with the bridge pickup turned all the way down?

Yes, there is. The precision's sound is a lot more full, and the split pickup kills any electronic buzzing. The Jazz (to me) sound fairly hollow and quiet with the bridge rolled off - but maybe that's just me.

As mentioned, it's all a matter of preference. You'll find quite a difference in the two basses the more familiar you get with them. Amps will make a significant difference too, as well as your playing style.

If you're able get out and play a bunch of each through the equipment you intend to use, otherwise you'll be trading them in a lot.

I developed the Teflon cornbread pan for General Dynamics and can tell you that it is made from solid Teflon that has been processesd using a General Dynamics Model H122 Dioscilator. I recently traded the Dioscilator and $5 for a good piece of rope (22 miles long) and am now recovering nicely. What chicken jokes are you talking about?

The "Pan" is amazing, I can't stop looking at it and touching it.

I think what Dave is saying is that this thread is a trainwreck. Or he could be saying that most threads are a trainwreck anymore.- Or that most threads get derailed by happless derailers or that this thread is derailed. Or that over all we have become derailed for the most part. So in general the event of derailing has caused a trainwreck and that certain frustration has set in. This is only a guess but I sense by the picture that Dave is saying (even though I don't know him )" You dinkwheats have stinkin derailed yet another thread and it has led to an all out freakin trainwreck. You should be slapped more than once."

Now it is not on purpose that I put words in the mouth of Dave. I'm just exploring possibilities and I could be totally wrong. For all I know Dave is saying " I love the fact that all the threads get derailed like a bicycle sprocket every 3 minutes. Please do it some more."

Then again the outlook may be somewhere in the middle.

Then again I could be just full of it and need to go slap myself severely about the head and neck. Rest assured that I have just done so.

What was that again..? I was right in the middle of the beginning of the end and did'nt quite hear what your wrote before so can you write it loud enuff please ?
MarloweDK is a very VERY very good bassist, one of the better ones I have heard in some time(aside from myself and maybe Sid or Gene Simmons possibly)HAHAHAHAHA!! Yeah Right, those two Bozo's could'nt carry a note if it had a handle on it :P .
Marlowe is well rounded bassist that can teach even the most veteran bassist something, and he's not the type who is arrogant because he knows how good he is,very humble and it shows in his lessons, everyone here should check him out on u-tube,type in MarloweDK and hold on to your socks cause Kansas is going bye bye.

Yes, the closest I came to making a Jazz sound like a P was with both Jazz pickups wired in series. This is the way the P pickup (which is actually two pickups of opposite polarity wired in series for louder/noiseless sound). The bridge and neck pickups on a jazz are wired opposite polarity so if you have both pickups volume controls set at the same level they are "cancelling or bucking the hum". This series wiring is what makes the P have more volume and punch. Having said that I have gone full circle from MIA Jazz in 2004 (with S-1 series/parellel switch) to 3 different P basses and now back to an American Special Fender Jazz bass that I truely love. It is a bit more versatile than the P but the P has that "ahhh full tone to it. The sound I prefer on a Jazz is neck full and Bridge 3/4 of full with tone at mid position with Nickle plated rounds.

I have the killer 01 Jazz and the Roadworn 09 P that both just have the same kind of ringing sustain. They only sound a little different. Only a bass player (for the most part) could tell. I'm actually favoring the P bass after last weekend at the gig. We played this huge room where I thought the sound would just be horrible. It wasn't. It really made my bass vibrate your bones. It was great-- the sound that is. When I use the Jazz I do the bridge PU cut back to fatten it up. It honks. It took forever to find a Jazz and a P (for me) that I feel are truely top of the line . The jazz is pure stock. The p has a 70's Dimarzio model P in it. It really sounds like an old P bass. If you heard it you'd agree. The Jazz is a little more punchy but has the gut sound there in it.

to answer the original question- I own both a P and a J Bass. Both American standard. It is a matter of preference. I love both basses. I like to put flats on the P bass and go for a more vintage sound and I like to put round wounds on the Jazz and go for a more classic sound. I think the Jazz plays a little faster, I think the P Bass punches thru a mix a little better. Even though the J bass has 2 Pick ups, I think the P Bass can get bassier or more trebly with the 1 pick up if that makes sense? I don't understand it, just my feeling. Lastly, to my ears, the basses have a distinctive role- I think of Jazz, I think of "growl", you hear it best from the sound that Jaco got out of his Jazz- a really great signature growl that you can get without much teaking, just a good set of round wounds and it's almost how you use your hands in the attack and vibrato. The P bass is "punch" and I think Sting gets a great P Bass sound. It sounds almost like an old upright, you feel like adding a good tube amp sound (and or good compression), a touch of echo and man, that is the sound of bass to me. This is all my opionion, you have to try them both out extensively and go for what really inspires you. If you're able to or lucky enough to have both, I recommend it as you will most definitely find great use for both.

Everyone needs at least one of each, otherwise you'll always want to buy another one.
