So, this message is a little late, but it only seems fitting.

I finally got my American Deluxe P-bass. It took 9 months of waiting, but it was worth every minute. My Fender dealer originally said it was going to be 3 months. In waiting the extra time, the calendar flipped, so I lucked out and received the 60th anniversary edition.

I couldn't be happier. The feel of it is unbelievable. Makes me wish I'd upgraded my Squier 10 years ago. The sound is blowing my mind. I've never had an active bass before. I do love the fact that I can switch back to passive, but I haven't yet 'cause I'm lovin' the active life.

I do have a question though. It's my first time with strap locks. I was wondering if the strap pins, on the bass, are suppose to be a little loose? I can wiggle them with my finger, a little bit. Should I tighten them up, or are they meant to move? I do have the locking pieces, on the strap ends, really snug.

PS: Finding uses for the extra fret is fun. Mmm...New sound textures.

Congrats on your new bass. keep the part of the straplock on the guitar snug, but don't over tighten it because you could damage the threads/wood. The part on the strap should be pretty darn tight.

Screw holes with get larger everytime the screw gets removed or repetitive tightening which widens the hole and makes it hard to tighten which makes it worse.
I will remedy that by taking the screw out and pushing in some toothpicks to act like a dowl would, some add wood glue or crazy glue ETC..It make the wood harder and bonds together the toothpicks.
Its really easy just done go nuts with the glue,it can come out as you tighten the screw down,Gorilla glue works well but extreme caution take, the Gorilla glue will enlarge as it dries and making the hole requiere being drilled out again.
Its not hard to do,but try not to over-tighten it too much untill its fully dried for max hold.Wood glue is another possibility but its a bit messy but will-not hurt the finish,G/glue can pull of some paint or clear-coat when trying to remove the overspillage.
Try to not overtighten it,it gets worse with every fix.
GOODLUCK!

Thanks fellas.

I've done the toothpick trick before with my other basses. It just seems a little early to be doin' it to my new baby. I'll snug 'em up for now, and when it gets worse (down the road) I'll perform the toothpick surgery.

Wanted to get a shot of her in her case, but a Black on Black bass in a dark case doesn't show up very well :P

So, back to the strap-locks. I'm getting a high pitched squeak when they move. Any special bass-friendly recommended grease/lube that won't hurt the finish? Something gentle?

Spray can silicone is cheap and unlikely to damage most finishes. I have used it on shotguns with very expensive black walnut stocks, on auto finishes, and around the house. No staining on any of these surfaces.
