Todays bass photo is :::Image

Well If I would have known that Fender was dicontinuing the Jag bass I would have kept it. This was a good bass- no problems. Not too heavy - active sound was very good as was the passive. I guess the Jags just never caught on- these will become collector basses? Maybe? Maybe in 10 or 15 years- not sure. Another one I should have kept.

I think these are still in production in Japan, just not being imported to USA. They are still offered on the Japanese guitar sites. They went on clearance over a year ago at the large online Fender dealers.

They are very good looking basses. I never played but one copy. Maybe it was the amp or cord, but it sounded sort of mid heavy.

Also, might try posting in the OTHER FENDER BASSES Forum. Might find somewhere that still has some!

They never caught on? Thats odd seeing the new line of Squier Jags just came out with a boat-load of different types with both scale and pickup options to choose from,I would have thought they were well recieved.
I am sure it was'nt due to its quality Fender Japan is ALWAYS spot on with all they'er guitars and basses so thats ruled out,I have played about 4 or 5 since they have come out and they feel very similar to a Jazzbass but just a little lighter but not as simple when it comes to the pickups.
I have found that they are on the complex side of the field in its electronics which is a turn off to me,In the middle of a set(never mind in a song)having to fiddle with all these knobs and push buttons AND stacked pots ETC..... to much to think about while on stage.
I did a mod on one for a buddy which consisted of removing all the electronics and starting out with a set of 62 re-issue jazzbass pick-ups, stacked pots,cloth covered wires,new output jack,reverse tuners and a bad-ass bridge and a custom pickgaurd to cover all the now use-less body routes once hidden by the chromed control covers,It was more or less for looks only,it sounded like a jazzbass but just a bit thinner due to it being lighter and smaller in body size.
STOCK UP,ONLY 5 PER HOUSEHOLD

^^this^^ and you can get the Squier with just simple knobs, albeit with active pickups for $199 to $299. I played the ones with the humbucker...not a fan of that one. I am a fan of the Vintage Modified Special tho, like the Vintage Modified just with out the block in lays and Duncan Designed pups. I was looking to get one for awhile for my self for my birthday, but I think I'm going to hold back and maybe get a SansAmps instead.

I never liked them very much. My perception was they ate tone, especially the pearloid ones.

C'mon, you really think so brotherdave? I sure love the look of them, esp the pearloid ones.

Yes I really think so. I had a 71 Jazz with rosewood and pearloid inlays for about 7 years and I always felt like the neck was pretty but I always felt like the inlays somehow hurt the neck's resonance. It was a Torres neck so it was a good one, but it fell victim to the Labella 760M syndrome.

I saw one tonight at Bill's Music in Catonsville, MD. Just like the one in the author's picture if I remember correctly. It caught my eye because I read this thread earlier and I saw that distinctive red color.
