I have an American P Bass that appears to have been refinished that appears to have been originally silver. The hardware on it is Brass- was brass hardware (cream colored pickups) an option at any point?

A serial number will tell us everything we need to know to be able to find out everything you needed to know,GOT THAT?
I Dont
BTW there were a few basses with the gold/brass colored options, the Elite(some had the double p-bass pick-ups)and the Precision Specials (some came with the tbx active/passive stuff)and one Jazzbass model as well.

If your axe uses a split-coil humbucker with white covers and a 3-knob setup with a mini 2-way toggle, it would be a Precision Bass Special.

Post a couple of photos, it might help us to identify your bass.
