I have a 1981 Precision Special Edition. Recently someone anonymously knock my guitar off the stand and it hard enough to push the knobs through the pick guard. I have the active pickups so the pots are soldered to the circuit board. I tried to get replacement parts trough my Fender service depot and they were told there are no replacement parts. Could someone please help me locate pots for it. I have the fender part numbers. 017501(250K Tandem Pot) and 017500(250K Lin) I really want to keep my Fender genuine. Even just the name of the manufacturer of the pots would be a great help.

Go to Brother Dave's web page, you may find out there, or he will be on later and probably answer you.

Those are hard to find but I found this one for about $8: http://cgi.ebay.com/Genuine-Fender-80s-Bass-Dual-Control-Pot-N-O-S-/370403008076

That is an eBay offering by ANGELA INSTRUMENTS. Since they have the one, they might have the other but in quantities too small to list or perhaps Angela can obtain one from the same source where they got the other one. You can look at their site at angela.com. I do business with them now and then and have always found them to be prompt and reliable. You can contact them direct here to inquire: http://angela.com/contact-us.aspx

If it did not break the preamp circuit board you are very lucky so count your blessings. I've heard of this model having this happen before and when the pots get pushed in like that it can damage the board. If the circuit board gets damaged new pots won't fix it.

Good luck!

Thanks for the help and direction. I am fortunate in that my board is intact. The guitar will play but if I turn the pots the pop, loudly. There was a link on Brother Dave's Resource section leading me to Guitar Parts Resource. They do have a double pot which should work. It is the right size(250k with 1/4" shaft) and it has the center detent I need. So all I need to do is find a single with the center detent.

Well a broken clock is right twice a day. I'm right more often than that so I'm slightly more valuable than a broken clock. But only slightly.

Bob, that spaghetti looks really great. I'd like to get it in a sunburst!

ANYWAY, what happens to these basses is when they fall over is the shaft stresses the contact wafer insider the pot and it cracks or splits. That would explain the crackling noise. Good thing the board didn't crack. Yes these pots had detents. Really nice feel that was SMOOTH and tight.
