When you go to put it on layaway, try a Tech 21, just for kicks.

They are two very distinct sounds. The original was based on Fender's Telecaster pickup and had a single coil with a pole piece under each string. This gave a relatively sharp attack and not much sustain, and caused problems with hum and also damaged the contemporary 15" bass speakers. The split-coil was designed to eliminate all those issues. It has two coils one for each two strings, which are wired out of phase (humbucking) to get rid of the hum, and the pole pieces were set on each side of each string to ease the attack and aid sustain. There are no similarities between the two.

A single coil P is thumpier due both the faster attack and faster decay, and has a more "hi-fi" sound to it. It can "feel" like it has better articulation in the notes than the later one. It has a more even frequency response up and down the scale. The split-coil has a smoother attack and a longer decay, and has a pronounced mid-range hump in the response which gives it its characteristic tone. I love the '51 RI for fast material, and the split-coil for about everything else. I've never been able to make either one sound like the other.
