Seeing how I usually hangout more on the P-bass side of the forum this is where I will ask my question.
Has anyone have any experience with the Varitone bass tones ? I have seen them a bunch of times on Ebay and seem to peek my interest a bit,I am building(finishing more like it)a P/J bass and want to try something different than just the usual wiring mods(series, parrell, coil tap ETC..)and dont prefer anything active to be part of my repertoire but I want to push the envelope a bit and try something new.
I have always thought the passive tone was much more genuine of a tone, its much more organic and pure and I dont feel the need to have one "just to have one" So...Anyone have feedback ?
Thanks in advance.

The CertainBass Varitone is a six position rotary switch that replaces a standard bass tone control. 1st position is flat, wide open bass. 2, 3 and 4 are classic tones of Jaco and Jamerson, 5 is where the midrage dip and metallic sounds of Stanley and Marcus are, and position 6 mimics an out of phase pickup tone (and has the same effect on a P-Bass or other single pickup bass). Unlike other Varitones, CertainBass own version has quiet switching, a must for recording.

The Varitone tone shaping circuit is totally passive, eliminating the need of a 9V battery.

A number of configurations are available: simple volume and Varitone to retain vintage look, a 3-knob system of volume/Varitone/blend or volume/Varitone/master high end roll-off or a 4-knob system of volume/Varitone/blend/master high end roll-off.

Side jack and concentric pots options are also available.

Now thats a complete well informed answer/reply,I will do further investigating on which one best fits a P/J bass I am in the process of building,I got a couple of maple necks to choose from(maple on maple tele style neck or a Vintage Memphis MiJ maple on maple p-bass neck)along with all the hardware,The Japanese made body needs a set of both the P and J type pickups and a nut(new tele neck came without a nut,tuner-ferrels or the 4 mounting screw holes, luckely I can do these but I would be pissed if I had to pay.
Thanks for the informative answer, BRILLIANT!
