Hi all.

A week ago the washer on top of the bass that was holding the jack input in place, unscrewed and the jack slipped into the bass. With a pair of pliers i got it out, screwed it back into place but ever since, i've been experimenting a loud distortion coming from the PU and this ONLY while i play. When i'm not playing , there's no noise significant noise.

It kinda sounds like a speaker with a blown out resistance or something. I try my amp and my soundcard with my two other basses and the noise is not happening, so it's coming from the fender only.

Any Ideas what it could be and how i can fix it ??

Thanks

Do you feel adventurous? If so, unscrew the pickguard after taking the nut off the jack. Re-do the solder connections .

If you don't want to attempt that, find a guitar tech.

While pulling it out, you might have accidentally cut off one of the wires, or they snapped off when the jack fell in. What you could do is check the wiring and whatnot, or get it re-soldered just to be safe. Had this issue before.

Basically, what ofxan said.

This is one of those times to think about learning how to do some of the minor repairs on your bass,Its really not as hard as one may think, even if you chose to not touch the electronics there's still quite a few things that dont require soldering skills.
You have a vast ocean of information on this site,if it happened to or on your bass or is in the process of...chances are one of US has been through it and can assist some-one who has not yet.
Do some reasearch and go slow, its a process that is very rewarding and cost efficient too.

The guys around here would charge $50 to take off the p guard and solder the wire. Cost me $100 to have 5 bridge holes drilled. That's the last time. I don't know why I didn't do it myself-- I think I was frustrated and didn't want to mess with it PLUS I didn't freakin" know it was going to be $100!!!

I think the only regular type repairs I need a real repair guy for would be a nut or a refret. So I have saved just a ton of money except for that $100 bucks!!! HA!! :D

Probably the wiring got twisted and a wire is touching something it shouldn't or not touching something it should. Yes you can take it for factory authorized service but for something so minor I don't think I could wait the three weeks or longer for a warranty repair. That is the going rate at most places around here anyway. It should be a simple repair. 1. Remove strings or loosen significantly to allow some clearance. 2. Remove all pickguard and pickup screws. 3. Lift pickguard and pickups and remove. 4. Repair or untangle wiring using solder as required. 5. Replace everything where it was.

Part of routine do-it-yourself maintenance is checking the tightness of jack nuts and all screws, including machine head screws and especially the strap button screws where a malfunction could be quite damaging to your instrument. Don't over-tighten anything. Just keep it snug. I use a socket wrench for the jack nut and only hand tighten it using only the socket without the socket wrench handle. A screw and jack nut check should be done at least monthly on an instrument used daily. Screws and jack nuts seem to come loose on basses more than regular guitars due the lower frequency vibrations the instrument produces.
