Hey everyone, I'm new here so don't be too harsh on me if i ask some stupid questions :D

I got this bass back in maybe middle school or junior high (mainly because it looked cool) but lost interest once I got to high school because I had so much other stuff going on. Once I graduated and moved to college it got put in storage (not climate controlled either) where it stayed for 10 years. I dug it out a couple years ago and earlier this year I took it to a local shop and had it checked out and the guy said it played great and all he did was change the strings. it does have some cracks which I'm assuming is from the drastic temp changes.

it's a p-bass lyte, made in japan and according to fender's product dating it is from 1993-1994. what else can you tell me about this bass? anyone know what color this is (red obviously but did Fender have a special name for it, etc...)

what little i did know about playing has been forgotten but I'm determined to learn to play so this is going to be my starter bass.

sorry if the pics are rotated. photobucket is acting up on me.

welcome to the Forums! Nice bass, it's a P Lyte...love those things. Back in college I used to go to the music shop just to mess with the '91 and '92 P Lytes. Not sure the name of the color. I think you have active pups, master vol, then the 3 eq setting. Schaller Lyte bridge and Schaller tuners. I would keep that bass, it is fetching more and more money now the New Age Old Skool MIJ basses - even lightly modded MIJs are fetching decent $$$ now - check out eBay for the MIJ prices.

Yes welcome to the forum. Those are really nice basses as mentioned. I'd love to have one myself. They have a lot of things right with them. First class Fender Japan stuff!

Hmmmm. Fender Rumble and the smaller Fender TV series amp comes to mind. That Fender B-Dec bass amp is a perfect first amp. If money is an issue, the Rumble 30 is a good starter/practice amps at a low price.

Good features to look for on a starter/practice bass amp include at least a 10 inch speaker, about 30 watts, an auxiliary input for CD/MP3, a headphone jack and everything else beyond that such as onboard compression, limiting, graphic EQ, built in tuner, metronome, jam tracks etc is gravy. There are amps smaller than 30 watts, but they don't sound nearly as good and if the amp doesn't sound good you'll lose interest quickly.

If you want to play with a band that has a drummer and electric guitars then you'll need more like 75 to 100 watts minimum, but if you are only going to only have one amp I'd still recommend it also has the headphone and auxiliary input features. I prefer headphone practice as it doesn't disturb neighbors, family, pets or in your case...grandmothers.

Most of my home practice is through a Bass Driver into a very small mic mixer into a desktop computer and then into headphones. No amp required. That works fine for me. You can also make rudimentary recordings that way too. But that setup requires the Bass Driver and the mixer which costs about as much, if not more, than a decent practice amp.

That bass is from one of Fender Japans best years of production,Its no rookie or beginner bass at all, Duff McKagan's has been using these basses from the very beginning of his famous career playing w/Gun's & Roses, and still uses them now too.
So dont feel like you need to up-grade your bass for any reason other than wanting to play something different, its build quality and tone would be a hard feat to accomplish for any guitar/bass maker, period!
This bass can take you from learning "little bo peep" right through to "The Lemon song" and back again, its both a entry level and a pro bass all in one.
