Well, here I go.

I'm relatively new to basses (relatively meaning a year and a half of playing) and I was looking for a new bass on ebay when I found a weird P/J combination bass. The seller says it's a made in japan p/j bass, and hes started the bidding at just $75.00. Its literally ALL BLACK. The body, pickguard, neck, and headstock are all black, with chrome hardware. Its got the larger 70's style tuners, and gold Fender logo. Next to the Fender print is "P-J Bass", and the serial number is AO27105. It looks pretty badass. Can anyone tell me what this thing is? Ive also seen a similar Strat with all black paint, Floyd Rose, and chrome hardware around too that was original (or so the guy said :| )

A P/J Bass should have a Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge position and a 3-knob setup (V/V/T) with a side or top-mounted input jack.

This is a frankenbass in my eyes as the Jazz Bass bridge pickup is not present.

However, the PJ prefix does't necessarily refers to the pickup combo. In such case the term would also refer to a Precision Bass with a Jazz Bass neck attached.

Hmm ive always thought that the fender p bass deluxe had both pickups and not necessarily the p/j's.

Fender Japan has their own versions of basses,I dont even recall A deluxe model in the Japanese line,I dont believe they offer it as not to compete with the US model.
There are a boatload of basses that are not offered here(USA)that are pretty F'en cool,p-basses that are blacked out(similar to the 80s contempory line),jazz basses with both P & J pickups,re-issue jazzbasses from all dif yrs and options,P-basses from all Dif yrs and options,Aerodynes with dif color options and Mustang basses with all the cool racing stripes & colors are offered.
Wish I lived in Japan :|

Fender Japan offered the Precision Bass Lyte Deluxe as an alternative to the pre-2010 USA versions with the humbucker in the bridge. My brother bought his P-Bass Lyte Deluxe when he was in England in the late 1990s.
