Anybody know what type of finish was on a 1982 P-Bass Special? I believe the original color is Vintage White, but is it Poly or Nitro?

The 1982 Precision Specials came in White, Candy Apple Red or Lake Placid Blue.
Or in a solid Walnut neck and body version that was either natural brown or done in a shaded sunburst over the Walnut body. I think the were painted in polyurethane although I can't be sure.
I have a Lake Placid Blue 82 Pbass Special and its color hasn't changed but I did see one that had turned green from exposure to the sun

All of them had gold plated hardware and they were the first active bass made by Fender.
Here is a picture of my 82 Precision Special:

Thanks for the info! Mine, unfortunately, has a few changed parts, neck and pickguard, and has been played plenty!

Some erroneously consider the mini-toggle selector as a series/parallel switch, which is not true. This selector is an active/passive switch which bypasses the onboard active 2-band preamp.

When the bass is set to active mode you've a master volume with active treble and bass controls. In passive mode the treble pot works like a traditional tone control while the bass pot is disabled.

Chromeface is correct in his description of the controls on this bass.

One problem with these basses is that the bass is not as loud as a regular Precision bass is in passive mode. This had led a lot of owners to pull out the active electronics and convert the bass to a normal Precision bass set up. This is a bad idea IMHO. The bass is very cool in its original configuration and to convert it is a real loss of a unique instrument.

The Rocco Prestia Model used a similar configuration without the active/passive switch. Unlike the Special, the jack was side-mounted and the split-coil humbucker reversed.
