Hello to all,
I'm in the process of buying a Tony Franklin Fretted Precision Bass. Can someone spare a minute to tell me how to identify the manufactured country of origin and the year? Is there some encoding rule in the serial number (for the year). I just want to ensure that firstly the bass is made in the US (I'm aware of the controversy on the origin not being a factor to decide, but just want to stick to it). Are all those details printed or engraved somewhere on the bass body or innards?

Greetings

At the very top of this page, you will see a "Support" tab. Hover on that tab and the drop down box will contain a "Knowlegebase" section with a "Product Dating" menu line. Click on "Product Dating" and follow the instructions.

Normally, the headstock will contain the country of origin as well as the serial number. Use that info to select the proper line to start your search within the "Product Dating" menu.

+1... Tested on both of mine, and it comes out right for country and date.

There's also a quite useful 1 page chart here http://www.guitarattic.com/Fender%20Serial%20Numbers.htm

Good luck :D

On most Fender instruments there actually is a Part number "scheme' if someone happens to have a part number available. A few years ago I put a little somethin together that was a bit like the below.....its not written in stone but as a basic guide it does alright.
Anyway.......for the curious.

A. B. C. D. E.

011 74 02 7 06

A. (usually)Tells you the Country of Origin. (027-MIJ, 013-MIM etc)

B. The model.

C. On a guitar- the type of Neck. For instance:
00= Rosewood (RW) fingerboard
02= Maple (MN) fingerboard (or solid maple neck)
20= Left-handed RW
22= Left-handed MN
08- Fretless

D. Case Type (or none) For instance:
7= standard molded case
8= deluxe case
3= gig bag
5=no case on electric models
0= no case on acoustic models

E. Color number (on guitars) For instance:
06= Black
00= 3 Color Sunburst
80= Arctic White

All the best,
rob

Rob hello, thank you very much for the references. Do you happen to know a place that has the complete look-up lists for all the sections you posted? For instance the complete list for countries of origin and the associated codes you gave an example of.

Greetings, :-)

That is fascinating, Rob - I never knew there was a logic behind the numbers :wink:

Thank you very much for posting this - it ought to go up on the support site just as you've laid it out here...

Thanks again :D

Thanks PVTele!

Like I said....I put that together a few years ago. Mainly as a guide for new folks here in service. Looking at it....i can already see some updates that need to be there and maybe even a correction or two (115-MIM w/Floyd....I think not. Should be 113 i think)
Putting it on the Support site is certainly a consideration...it does need some work though....

All the best,
rob

Rob, I didn't notice in your initial post that the lists are unofficial and built by your experience of fender equipment. Thank you very much for disclosing it.

Greetings :-)
