Now that is a very tasty looking bass indeed :D Not a combination that immediately occurs to me at least, but it really does look the business...

That's pretty much it. My Marshall amp is the sound I like. The bass is a little more complex.

I'm dealing with the wife situation, one bass. Not an excuse, just the way it is.

When I was doing road work, I moved other gear. My own was in storage, or sold off and got something else later. You do what you have to do.

see what happened for me is that i bought my squier p bass off of some kid for 65 bucks, i just wanted one to mess with and see if i liked it, now that i discovered i actually love to play bass my squier is the "one" i've gone and played many other basses, jazz, precisions, ibanez, and others, yet i have not found one that feels better to me than this squier, so i am upgrading all the electronics, and gonna keep this around :D

And that is a very sensible decision, if I may say so! I've a well-used Squier Tele that I'll never change, simply because, humble though it is, it's one of the nicest Teles I've played. (And our lead guitarist is a Tele collector, with a couple of beautiful CS models as well as his regular 'cooking' axes, so I've tried some darned fine ones :D )

I've played a lot of basses over the years. They all have something I like, just deciding which one has the most things I like.

I've done plenty of .45 pistol work, but never trusted myself not to screw up on a bass.

I can strip, repair, and recalibrate a milking plant in my sleep, nearly - but that doesn't mean I'm happy messing with my frets

No disrespect but if you stick to the bass you may/might/possibly come to a ephifany that as much as you treasure/love/worship your Squier that it does lack certain features that come with a well made bass.
It is not nec. a dollar amt or a certain brand(FENDER!)its no secret that higher priced basses for the most part are simply made better, tend to play better, and sound better USUALLY(I cannot etch in stone ones choice of what features makes a bass perfect for "them").
I myself thought I would head the revolution of boycotting high costing basses back when I first meandered onto the bass scene,I stood on my soapbox and preached my idea of "just mod a cheaper bass, there's not much difference"well as I got to be a better bassist I realized what a good bass played like(sound is a choice, but stiff strings and a crappy neck w/poorly seated frets is universal)
Now your on cloud nine with your first bass,if you are still playing a year from now(I hope you are)see if your taste for a more expensive/better made bass changed or your idea of your first bass being the Creme De'La Creme of basses differs.
I do not associate price with playability I go by feel,I could jury-rig ANY bass to play decent enuff,I just built a p/j bass with less than 200.00$ invested,it could use better pick-ups and pots and a output jack, but as far as the actual playability is concerned It plays BETTER than my 1400.00$ jazz bass HANDS DOWN,not because I built it or not,I am no Leo Fender it just hammers home some of the things we discussed and remain openminded for other posibilities, there is a reason why they make more expensive basses,I myself had the same idiology believing a simple up-grade or two is all that seperates a 179.00$ affinity Squier from a American standard or even a Mex standard for arguments sake,Time will tell.

Machining, repairing or maintaining?

It would be safer to mess up your bass. :)

Some machining, a lot of repairs, and maintaining. .45's Work nice. You don't want to get into the repairs I've done on Sig-Sauer, Baretta, and Walthers. Not the same as guitar repair. If I screw up a piece of wood on a bass, I'm screwed. Not the same as getting and replacing a new sear. A shooter would use a weapon I worked on, and BET HIS LIFE ON IT! Too many basses out there to not have to worry about. I'll leave the bass work to the guys that know what they're doing.
