My friend its a crap shot finding what type of strings to use,I tried just about every brand there was and even do it twice to make sure I did'nt overlook anything.
I always recommend trying a compression wound string, they are a pleasure to play, you get the boom of the flatwounds and the the definition of roundwound string.
They are basically a roundwound core that is wrapped with a almost flattened outer winding, that promotes a smooth flatwound like feel and the gritty roundwound outer winding,so its actually a flat wound and a round wound combined to get thet most from both string types, they Always sound good on any model(jazz or P-bass) and they put less wear on the fretwire.everyone wins :)

I personally only use stainless steel rounds. It fits the music I play (NYHC/Metal). But stainless steel is bright, so it's not for everyone. I used DR High Beams - .45 - .105.

When I was finally sure of what tone I was looking for I then began to try every different string type there was,and after some time I was pretty sure of some of my preferences, and by some I mean that different basses respond different with diff types of strings,my jazz sounded /played great with a certain few and my P sounded/played better with a few diff. ones.
But there is one set that I always felt worked on jazz & precision and p/j basses too were the compression wound, but remember its not just the sound its also the way they feel(tension, gritty or smooth)I dont usually prefer roundwounds but Rotosound makes a roundwound that I really like, they are called RS 66 Nickel's,they are'nt as harsh as a reg rotosound rounds but sound very close and being nickel they are'nt as hard on the frets plus only cost 15.00$,and my jazz sounds and plays great with them, usually rounds are stainless steel but nickel is a nice option to tryout.

Is it a matter of sound, or do they feel a bit stiff to you?

they do feel awfully tight and they don't have the sound the stock round wounds had.

I had a set on my stingray and i liked them. maybe the round sound messed me up?

i have been playing a while and used to use D'adairrios then i started playing in a blues band and went to the chromes now i am :?

Also what Sabre had been saying too...tough to describe sound, but most of us know what we like. Some strings take time to break in, some sound good from the box and last awhile (my experience with DR is this). The problem I have with DR, since they do last a long time, you don't realize when it does go bad till one day you're like, "what the h*ll is wrong with this bass...?!"

My favorite roundwound is the Thomastik-Infeld EB344 PowerBass set. It is no contest between them and anything else I've ever used and I've used a bunch of strings. Just an amazing sounding and playing long-life medium-low tension string. They cost a lot which is the only downside. They last and last and last which makes them a better value than buying new strings every month or three.

I've been using GHS Precision stainless REGULAR Flats on a 51 RI P-Bass and like them. Really got the boom-boom and really smoother feeling than the Thomastik-Infeld JF344 Jazz Flats on my active I-WORD bass. Also the Precision Flats have more tension than the TI Jazz Flats which I like. I like the TI Jazz Flats fine except for the ultra-low tension which takes getting used to. Again, real long life in both these sets.

I suspect the chromes will break in somewhat, you'll get used to them, and the two (er, 6?) of you will meet in the middle somewhere

If you really can't in the end hack 'em, why not try a set of d'Addario Half Rounds? Or pressure wound, like Rotosound Solo Bass?

I tend to vacillate between Chromes and Half Rounds (I've a set of the latter on at the moment, but they're about due for a change...) though I think the Chromes just edge it.Rotosound Jazz Bass 77 (the monel flatwound ones) are good strings too. I might try a set of those again...

The one thing you can say about string indecision is it isn't quite as expensive as bass indecision

My Mr. Nylon specials run $32. Buckaroos. You guys would be surprised to see the number of studio basses strung with nylons. The End.

BTW - I never asked - what are your string gauges with those?

If you wipe down the strings, they will hold up really good. One last thing about nylons, they last for almost ever, they're protected from dirt and perspiration, and they sound great. The reason most strings die out, dirt, perspiration, etc. Not from being played. Corrosion to the core under the windings.

D'Addario; .50 .65 .85 .105 They're very easy on the nut, frets, the board, and fingers. I never had a finger issue with non nylons, but that's part of the nylon string.
