That's Fender's contact number, they'll be able to tell you.

Do you know where it was made,on the back of the h/stock will(should)be some info pertaining to where it was made like Indonesia,Korea yours sounds like China, let me see if I can hunt down some info for you, anytime you have a question about dating your bass go to Brotherdave's page here on the site, look for his link and he has a host of DIY stuff.

The bass is a US. I did a pot check and its coming back as CTS corporation (Chicago Telephone supply) 1973 52nd week both pots are the same. but the serial on the base of the neck that fits to the body is saying its pre CBS C380655. so now i'm really confused.

On the chrome neck plate where the screws pass through the body and into the neck ??OR a decal on the very bottom on the back of the neck ? Fender put the serial# on the neck-plate or the front of headstock under the Fender logo decal,Then finally on the back of the headstock in decal form.
Imports dont always follow this pattern, they did it a bunch of diff ways.GOT ANY PICS??one is worth a thousend words.it will instantly help.
Re-did some investigating on the "DATING FENDER WEB-SITE)It says the C prefix is a Japanese made Guitar or Bass from 1985-1985,its a very reliable site,a pic of the serial numbers and exactly their location will put an end to this MADNESS!,yeah it will help.

No as you split the neck from the body the number is written in red ink on the end under the trus rod screw. i tried to put pics on but i couldn't get them on.

More importantly is the decal, not just the Fenderr on the bass,it will say made in...then we can match the number to the letter prefex and compair it as close as pos. then it will make it easier,US stuff is easier now that they do it with serial numbers kept in order.
The imports are'nt as simple,They mix and match and dont always date in(or letter progression)things in order and sometimes they date them in bunches(2 or 3 at a time) which makes it tuffer to narrow down the precise year because of the non-sequencial serial numbers and Letter's,but you should be able to get a good Idea of where it was made and in what year, not exact but close.
G/Luck.
