I am familiar with all the other models MIM with the maple necks(50's classic ETC..)but have'nt had the experience of playing the up-graded MIM standard series maple/maple neck, everyone said the newer models of the standard series are much more consistent in the quality control dept and was curious...
I was wondering does anyone own the maple fretboard version models that just came out recentely ? Or anyone played them as of yet..?(I know your out there)I have not been able to locate them, they have been around for like 2 years now and my usualy Fender dealer only gets them in when its a customer order or so rarely that as soon as it goes up on the wall it sells before I can get down there.
So fellas if you know bout'em please drop me some info,I got a few bodies in need of a neck and am about ready for a new build.

After putting a Warmoth fretless neck on my FSR Standard, I got a fretless 5 and decided to put the fretted neck back on. Instead, I scored a MIM Standard maple neck, which I put on in place of the rosewood. Love the look.

No issues with any of the MIM Precisions (this one and a Classic '50s) or the MIM Jazz fretless I've owned. In fact, each one has been nicely playable.

Agreed maple always looks better on a p-bass regaurdless of it color, jazz basses do not always look better, the color of them is'nt ALWAYS calling for a maple/maple neck.
Also there are ones that do look better suited for rosewood fretboards(vintage/vintage re-issuesand a few others)but the p-bass just says maple across the board of all the dif ferent colors,it's just,It just looks saweet.(Dont tell anyone but I really prefer maple on maple necks on any bass any color).

I played a MIM Maple on thursday at a local store. Very nice action it. The frets were set better than an Am. Spl. in stock.

I got the exact same bass as yourself Fpbass, only I got the nasty looking off white pickgaurd(mint green..?)I really dont like that off/white color on a sunburst I reminds me of a cheep no-frills bass Not a Fender,I however do like a white p/gaurd on a black bass w/maple on maple neck(like my Idol and mentor Sid Vicious)YEEAAH RIIGHT !
Sunburst should ALWAYS sport a black p/gaurd It really makes the the lighter colors stand out by being between the black outer edge's and a black p/gaurd,and second only to that being the tortoise shell which really makes the bass vintage looking regaurdless of its age.Off white BLAAAAH! :|

I kinda' like the tort. It's one of those, yeah I do like it. Honestly law, I would love to have no pickguard at all. G&L does that with some of their models. Oh well.

Ditto,I had a 83 Squier p-bass that I was able to sport with only a pickgaurd I fashioned out of a anodized one that only covered the small route for the pots,it was'nt routed all the way to the pick-up cavity, just about 3 inches of pickgaurd was needed to cover the small cavity.
Thats how they all were for a long time, but in the 70s the cutbacks started and the routing got bigger to assist faster production times, but the early models looked great with the little MusicMan banana shaped(I know, dont say it,it looks like a...)metal control cover,I prefer the no-pickgaurd look on both the jazz and the P-Bass,Why have a nice peice of wood and a beautiful finish only to cover it up with a giant pickgaurd that hides 80% of the wood & Finish ?
Dont make sense.(like me)

The PG anymore I would have to think is just a cover. Not really protecting the body from picks.

I think it was really more for looks like you said more than really protecting the finish,I dont ever recal seeing a bass that was hammered by a pic because of the lack of a p/gaurd to be honest w/ya.
Even back when they were'nt even ment to be used with a pic and now I think its really more to cover-up crappy multi piece mis-matched grain also found on the US models too, ever see the back of some of the new US made basses ? the graining looks like a 1 yr old chose the pieces to be glue together, some of the later 70's natural finished basses have hideously matched graining I cant believe they had the audacity to clearcoat a body that looked like that,no wonder why the latter 70's guitar quality just about sunk the CO.
Even the Indonesian made ones of today that are showing woodgrain look better than the grotesque looking 15lb anchors of the latter 70s guitars,no disrespect to anyone who ownes/plays a Imported bass,it was only used as a comparison of the entry level basses of today against the Flagship highest priced basses of that time.

It's the one thing I can give Gibson credit for, is the access port on the back of the body.
