ok, so i need some more knowledge from my elders

i'm stuck in a tab rut, what i mean is i'm relying heavily on tabs for anything, and i always have even when i just played guitar. i see all these guys out there listening to a song and playing the bass line... i want to get to that point, so my question is how do i reach that goal, is there anything special i can do to tune my hearing and finding the right notes together, or is this just something that comes with experience??

here's where i'm at, i hear a note or chord, i know when it changes, if i have the tab or chord chart i go, ok this is G, this is C, and i'm good, but i can't listen to a song, and say right now i should play 2nd string 5th fret on this note.

so idk whats your thoughts guys :D

EDIT:
the reason i'm asking this is mainly because theres a ton of songs i want to play the bass lines to, and i can't find a tab for, and also because i don't want to rely on a tab, i'd rather look at a chord chart for the song and go from there :D

At times you have to hear the pattern there. Slow down.

Sit down with the bass for a couple of hours and free your mind. Just start random playing. Slow, fast, and don't be afraid to travel up and down the neck. The sounds are there.

To help you work out bass lines in songs, I suggest a good pair of headphones. I have a set of Sennheiser HD-280's. I feel that I can hear the bass alot better, as well as other nuances in music, and can work out things easier than listening to a song through normal speakers.

All of the above and listen to some of the Masters. While you may not care for the style, listening to James Jamerson (Old Motown) and Carol Kaye (Grass roots, Beach Boys and others) you'll get the fundamentals of real bass playing. This is ts heart of bass, that's where the music comes from, once you learn to feel it, you'll understand. It will come.

Just about every honest bass player will tell you they were influenced by one or the other or both.
